The first bit of the ULTIMATE BUDGET build is ready for viewing. The most expensive bit of this whole thing (thus far) has been the slotted and dimpled disks... At $350NZ per for front and $250 for rear. All prices are in NZ dollars from this point on (NZ peso as it is known on this side of the ditch...)

Not sure about this, but am going to put the new pictures at the front of this thread by editing this message and posting new photos within it.

Am still working on the paint (obviously) and a whole heap of interior stuff as well as having a go at what's in the engine bay. In fact, I didn't intend to do all this computer work today, as I should be head down and a*** up in the engine bay sorting out my air intake. I am dead set against having to chop holes in the bonnet, but may do one vent to let hot air out from the position above cylinders 4 and 5 in cavity between air flow manifolds and shock tower... In other words - right around the black plastic piping that tends to heat up to about 50 degrees externally...

Ah bugger - There I go again - Talking too much when I should be down my mates garage actually testing and doing..!

Right - Without further ado, here is the
CLIMATE CONTROL SCENE. DRIVETRAIN SCENE. DASH SCENE. DOOR SCENE. UNDER HOOD SCENE.

Coming soon (ish) will be exterior scene, interior scene. The exterior and interior are far from finished so may do something on showing you them over the weekend and then totally update it when more progress made. Ho hum...

I still ain't anywhere near being able to afford a paint job - That may have to come in the FUTURLANE I WON SOME MONEY BUILD.

Cheers to my good old mate the Butler at His XLNC's residence, Geoff Bloody Baylis. It's his garage I have been using as my rented one isn't big enough to open the car doors and it's been raining constantly for about a month! This also means that he get's the privilege of working on a Ford (usually after about three hours of nagging from me, or when he feels obliged to when I do some building work around the place...)

He also happens to have helped put various turbos and superchargers onto other peoples cars in the weekends, so that is definitely a step up from me who has never successfully kept a motor alive for over a year of ownership.

Sorry, but that interior and dash are just horrid. Not my scene at all. But you've put a decent bit of effort in there and it does look well done, if that's how you like it then all's good!

The bushes on the rear swaybar are not Nolathane. They are Whiteline (who are now owned by Nolathane though, but wouldn't of been when that bar was originally made) - Nolathane are red, Whiteline are yellow.

BTW - what's with the wierd shaped photos?

Good to hear that you've improved the handling, because the wagons don't do too well in stock form at all!

No, but I like your thinking! I was more of an Atari ST freak myself, but the graphic is based upon a picture by Aliens creator, Gieger.

Can you send me your 5 speed manual, lpg kit and leather seats please? Whilst your at it, any chance of a LSD diff for a leaf sprung rear?

Once again, I would like to apologise for my humour and remind everyone that the FUTURLANE NO BUDGET BUILD is a while away yet....

I wouldna have done it if I didn't think it would be humour! It sure does polarise people. You either love it (like the panelbeater, spraypainter, chick who drives an XR6 and works at ED Junior Kustom chopping chop) or you don't (my missus, the junky next door, your good self....)

Yeah yeah you know who you are, I introduced you already... wrote:

Holy crap batman. Once again, I am bowing in your presence. I said NOLATHANE purely because I didn't know what the hell they were, but they don't appear to be Prothane or Rubber. I actually do think this setup is an original Whiteline from the late 90's. And I got it for $9. Thanks to everyones advice I knew what I was looking for - just glad the quote I got from the suspension specialist for $380 was out of my range on the day as it was the day before payday, not the day after! Hewhehehehe...

See above.. wrote:

WHAT WEIRD SHAPED PHOTOS?

The handling of the wagons in stock form is total crap, yeahp. No worse than an old Holden from the late 70's tho... Which is what I learnt to drive in.......

Now that car always ran on 5 cylinders... Ended up taking the plug out of the cylinder that didn't work and running it for another 50,000. It had air con too --- If you put your foot on the brake you would shave your boot on the road - had rusted so badly that you had to rest your foot on the wall of the footwell, not the bottom or front. You got real wet feet in the rain... Etc etc etc.

Okay dude - I am off to do something about getting some photos of my doors and my air intake (which I have not made yet, as have wasted all day sitting looking at this damn blue screen...)

Cheers for the knowledge and nudges in the right direction dude.

Am off to buy some oil for the diff and am thankful I have an easy to operate on EF series gearbox... Whose dum idea was it to remove dipsticks anyway!?!!?!? IDIOTS!

LOL, mate you are a funny guy.

Good to see you have made a start on your own thread, and I look forward to future updates.

Oh, and by the way, I might live in Aus but I am a Kiwi too LOL

Uhm - Yeah... NYLOC's have a little bit of nylon, like a washer in them that means they operate like a lock nut or it's more like using a lock-tite glue or something in the thread to stop them undoing themselves with vibration or load differences.

Goddam, I should be able to think of a joke or something about raising the IQ of both countries, but I honestly can't think of one.

Besides which, the NZ cash they give you for working over here isn't worth it.

Thankfully NZ still has A.C.C.

I am going to add more bits in the first message at top of thread....

Yeah I know but is that all thats holding the U-Bolts, they're not known for their high shear strength afaik.

Ahah... Would it help if I mentioned that the U-Bolts are 12mm diameter (a lot fatter than original) and that the nuts also have spring washers and that this set up is about 4 times stronger than what was on the car new from factory?!

What would you suggest to use instead? Am open to all input on that front... Don't want things going pear shaped on me.

And Aussie wouldn't let me in, otherwise I'd be there too.

Just bought some new wheels as a celebration of making progress. $450 with tyres that should last for a few months until I get some money for more.

All good.

Wheels are 17 x 7.5... Tyres are 235 x 45 x 17... Am off to find that calculator to see if I need to change the speedo pickup.... ;)

--- Advice and comment always appreciated. I honestly had never even pulled a gearshift or a dash bulb out before starting this project a few months ago. I am now thinking of giving up building and taking up pottering about on cars!

??????????????????????????????????????????????

Colour is actually attempting to be the silver blue that appears on Suzuki Swifts... Similar to the silver blue Nissan Micra or Honda Jazz or Mitsi Colt (in order of preferance)

enjoyable thread...wagons rock!!!

love the graphics...good to see a right brain creative type here, goes against all the logical (boring) left brainers...proves cars can be fun without being the fastest...

what was the cause of the low oil pressure after the head gaskit change?

You should be able to get some cheap u-bolts from the exhaust shop.
They will probably a bit thin though!
The respray idea look likely to blow the budget!

BITSA - It is, my friend, it is. It's got bitsa Futura, Fairmont, Fairlane, VN (ahemm), EB, ED, EF, EL, NF and even IBM.

Wagons do rock me old bean - But this boat like annoyance is helluva better with 1 tonne and sway bar rear. Need a fatter front sway bar now to go with the 235/45/17's that stick out almost to the guards.

Went for a real fast drive up Mount Vic last night and the first couple of off camber corners got me - The car doesn't understeer and wobble, so I almost drove of the INSIDE of the first corner whilst having to step off the gas! The second corner was a bit dodgy too --- I set the car up by turning in a touch early and loading the suspension up as I would have had to before... I found myself going around the corner before the apex so had to straighten up and then hook it in again... It was totally controllable the whole way once I realised to stop thinking of it as my car and re-learn the EF Rockin Wagon code of practice.

Thanks for the comments re creative VS boring. Even I possibly wouldn't buy a technical manual written by myself, but I know a lot of people who have drawings and posters I've done on their walls! Some are even advertising tourism operations that have been out of business for over a decade but are still on backpackers and hostels walls.

No idea to this day about the head gaskit change. I had the head machined and somehow outlet port 6 valve got bent. When I took the rocker cover off myself I noticed it had been replaced with an older EA style unit. Possibly the oil cavities work differently? More likely I would say something was dropped into oil cavities which worked its was into the pump or something. The pressure dropped slowly over 500k until the car started beeping and rattling from top end. When I revd it hard the pressure went up but it drained out the top end faster than I could get it there. Result - very rattly top end, possibly dodgy bottom end, and a shell of a car which I am still waiting to get the gearbox back from.

The U-Bolts from exhuast shops are thin alright - and they never seem to have a 73mm. They have 80's and above and 60's and below... Which is fine, but they are awfully fragile looking. Will continue to hold out for something perfect below the $30 each mark! Something will come up, and it is an easy swap...

Respray will blow budget, for sure. That's why I'm going to do it with spray cans from Supercheap...

;)

KIDDING. I am *not* going to respray the car with spray cans from Supercheap. Promise. No matter how tempting the cheapness is.

There was a spray painter who wanted me to work on his house (being a builder, I figure I may be able to accommodate that) in exchange for doing a bit of a paint on the car. Just where his number went is beyond me, but I'll dig it up when I finally sort out my worldly possessions.
