hey guys im looking for some information on what could cause our 97 EL 4.0 falcon to chew fuel, the car has done 115000km and has allways been serviced.

the car is now only just getting 400km to a full tank, sometimes not even that, the car used to return over double that on the highway, and way more around town, ive gotten this fuel consumption when i had 1.5 tonned on the back.

any help would be greatly appreciated, i know they dont use an airflow meter, do they run off a map sensor?

could be a number of things!

Map sensor (black box on firewall)
HEGO (02 sensor) on exhaust
Blocked cat

Try resetting the ECU *search*

hope this helps

400 to a tank? your not using all your accelerator pedal.

round town? 400 I'd be happy with, highway, get it looked at. check items as previously mentioned.

also wouldn't hurt to look at the exhaust manifold gasket. and the gasket between the two halves of the manifold. did it go to s**t all of a sudden or did it steadily get worse ?

i will check all the things lsited tonight.

it gradually got worse i think, ever since we took it in and got the injectors cleaned as the car kept stalling and ran really rough.

everything on the car is stock, no modifications.

Note: this is not my car, it is my mums and is driven very sedatedly. i drive a 180kw@tw AWD Subaru Liberty Turbo.

350 - 400 is normal for around town. My old man got 800 on the highway once, but he's such a slow driver!

Normal around town should be 500kms per 66l mine always does this and if I go to brisbane from the coast once in this time I get 580kms And NO I don't drive like an old man (even though I am one) :D :D :D

depends on how you drive really, i can get more then 650km of a tank on my au(stock), driving my ef like a maniac i wont get more then 300, the note of the exhaust just makes me want to put the foot to the floor.
other little things like the condition of the exhause, filter oil, sparkies can make all the difference

i average around 500 per tank normal town driving...less if I flog it....

I just changed to using 5W-40 oil (Shell) and that gave me another 50kms per tank...I'm not complaining!

I can get around 420kms to a tank with giving it a bit of stick. On highway trip comp usualy says about 700kms left after having done about 80kms at 100ks an hour.
