VE tables? What are they?

A VE table describes how much air will be in the engine for a given RPM and load. A 80% VE means that each cyl is being filled with 80% of its volume with air (intake restrictions etc make it hard to get 100%).

VE is important because it is used to work out how much fuel to put in. You can measure rpm and load with tach and map sensor, and look up the value in the VE table and use the engine capacity to work out how much air is in there. You then inject the right amount of fuel for your desired AFR (which is where the REQ_FUEL variable comes into play on MS2's).

You cant work out VE on paper - it really needs to be done on a running engine. Fortunately it is quite easy (but time consuming) to find. You simply put the rpm/load at the point in the table you want to tune and guess the VE. You then look at the AFR and see if it is richer or leaner than you want. If its rich, you decrease the VE until the AFR matches what you want. When the actual AFR matches the target AFR, your VE value is correct and the ECU then knows how much air is getting into the engine under that condition. You do the reverse if its lean.

You can get a VE map very quickly be doing a few points like this, then smoothing between them. This will get you a quick and dirty tune (which will probably work very well). Then you can spend hours fine tuning important cruise, idle and WOT area's.

Some manufacturers go to great lengths to stop after market tuners from decoding the maps within their EMS with varying degrees of success. Notable EMS which are difficult if not impossible to ‘chip’ are the Rover MEMS and the Ford EECIV system.

lol :-D Should all us owners be proud of ford? Good going.

Cheers for the link... good info

Less detail - A VE table tells the ecu how much air is going into the engine so that it can work out how much fuel to squirt in.
