I have a 94 ed 5 speed i6 with wade 1604 cam and 2.5 inch mandrel zorst, 3.23 ss diff and stock everything else.

i know for a fact im wasting petrol cause i can smell it when i get out of the car, but im not sure how much or whats causing it.

I recently installed a trip computer, when i filled the car up the range was about 460, which is about average for me, the average litre per 100km was 14.7 after some serious granny style driving for the week, no heavy take offs, no burnouts, drags etc and i still only made it to 499.9kms. Only time i wouldve used more petrol is in the mornings, 6-8am starts at work, but i travel along the south gippy freeway to work anyway so it leans out pretty quick.

When i do drive like a d***head (this week for example) i still get about 440-450 per tank, im thinking my car likes being thrashed, but im sure theres a more intelligent answer than that.

If anyone has a more intelligent answer please feel free to comment.

Thanks

Mate, sound like everything is normal. 450-500 kms on one tank is good considering you have a cam and lower than standard diff ratio. I wouldnt be too concerned about your fuel economy because that sort of mileage is great for a 12 year old car with a big six. My EL which has imporoved fuel consumption technology returns 500 per tank. And that is stock.
As for the petrol you can smell, i am no mechanic, but i would guess it may have something to do with the fuel tank. I don't know...maybe a breather pipe or overflow pipe. Just a guess.

mate i think 450 - 500 sounds about right for you. since u have a cam ur supposed to use more fuel but by the looks of it i think ur doing way better. I have a stock as a rock engine...........and im getting 350km or less and thats granny driving...........so i think ur in the good at the moment.

the smell might be caused by your oxy sensor. it could be on the way out

I used to get bad milage on my EB (as in about 350k on a tank of petrol). Then we rebuilt the engine (stock), p****d the old gas system off, put an xh snorkel on it and thermo fans. Now I get around 600ks and thats driving it normal to hard.
I would be looking at your oxy sensor!

Thanks guys, i just cant understand why i only get 50k's more when driving like an old woman, but if you guys rekon its ok, then im satisfied.

I nearly replaced my oxy senxor till i found out how much it was, my heater has prectically shat itself lately too and i was advised that might be the problem, i got too many fines atm to get a new one now but ill get one soon.

To be honest i cant remember, i think it was about 120. there was 2 types, the other was 150 i think.

It sucks when you have a mate that works for ford but he cant get you cheap stuff... it defies the point of having a friend who works at ford. :P
