Who knows what the different coloured tips on injectors mean?

By tip do you mean the pintle caps or the inlet port?
The colour of the pintle cap means nothing, the colour of the other end means something. Different part numbers of different brands use different colours.

Ok is there a difference between injectors from an 87 XF and the latter model eseries?

I google'd the part numbers for the XF and E-series injectors a while back and remember finding that the XF injectors were a bee's d**k bigger than the e-series.

Have a look at the link I posted at http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38344. Chances are the injectors you have are bosch units, which will have the ford no (87da-xxx) and the bosch part no (xxx xxx xxx)on them.
