Can anyone tell me how long it takes Ford to do a diagnostic scan? I booked my car in yesterday just so they can run the scan and tell me what it tells them. I asked the bird on the phone and she reckons 2 - 3 hours, depending on how long it takes the computer to do it. I would've thought no more than half an hour. I feel like I'm about to be bent over and shafted if I don't know for sure. 2 - 3 hours seems a bit extreme to me, but I'm not too sure what goes on.

we did a diagnostics on my EL at my mates house, didnt take anywhere near 2 hours, dont teven think it was half an hour.

scaffy, i have a code reader if that is what yopu want to do. you're welcome to use it.
to read the codes takes about ten-15 mins.

There was a doco on here telling you how to do a code check yourself, but it's coming up as a dead link
Max 10 minutes I would say. It basically involves connecting the two left most pins in the diagnostic port to put it in self test, then putting a test light across the output pin and 12v (and this is the bit where the tech doco would be nice, cause I don't remember which pins), and counting the pulses to get the codes. It's hard to say what they are including in the so called "diagnostic scan" though, it may include more then just checking the EECs logged codes. Even so, 2-3 hours sounds pretty over the top IMO for just doing a scan. If they were going to individually test sensors I'd say yeah probably. edit: ^^^^ That is the better option, I'm guessing it's one of "Muzza"s units?

Steady ED - I've tried doing the code check myself previously with no success. I don't think they'd check each sensor individually. I've heard that some do the scan with the engine off and some do it with the engine running and it'll run it at different revs and stuff. I figured the running one is the one I want and was told that's what Ford does.

You can do that yourself as well.
The V8s actually do a cylinder balance test as part of it, will shut down each cylinder one by one and count rev drop. If one doesn't effect revs as much as others, it will 'fail' a cylinder, although supposedly it's pretty ruthless. But if pugsley is close, use his code reader, makes it 10 times easier.

A big thanks to pugsley. I got it hooked up and it threw a few codes in key on/engine off mode.
2 I have queries about are 172 - Hego 1 always running lean and 176 - Hego 2 always running lean. Does this tell me both hegos are rooted or it's just informing me they are running lean and the tune needs to be sorted. I can't get the engine on diagnostic scan to work. It worked fine in pugsley's car, but mine won't have a bar of it. I disconnected the tweecer, but the car won't run without it.

It takes me 2 minutes to download all errors off my Fairmont in my shed. It is not hard.
As far as your fault codes are concerned, both HEGOs are reading lean which means your HEGOs will need replacing. Or if you prefer it verbatim from a factory manual: "The engine is always running lean. Can be caused by faulty H02S(2) sensor, cold sensor or exhaust manifold leaks." |

May not be faulty oxy sensors, could be extractors moving sensors further away from ports too, cold sensor.
Mine used to throw up HEGO lean fault as well, extractors and exhaust being only mods. But for their cost, it's probably worth replacement as piece of mind if nothing else.

I pulled them and one of them was smashed. Changed them and now it's back to its old, rich ways. It still threw lean code and I'd put it to sensor further down the exhaust stream. The busted one was obviously my problem, so thanks for the help guys and with the diagnostic scan pugsley.

did you clear the codes after you changed the Hego's?

I'm pretty sure codes are stored in the keep alive memory, so when you change the eec, the memory is cleared and you no longer have the codes. I think that's how it works anyway. Timmeh, it makes it even better when he lives less than 2 minutes away!
