Well the longer you leave the stuff on, the harder it will be to clean off.
Metho is the cheaper and easier option.

The boards are pretty robust - cheaper electronics boards you'll quite often see solder flux left uncleaned off - it's more corrosive than carbonised drinks.

That's interesting, Isohexanes are used in brake cleaner as well.

Isopropyl alcohol is good if you can get access to all the areas needing cleaning. Otherwise use Contact Cleaner; CRC makes a good, safe one, but it's not cheap:
