Gday,

Iv just installed a MSD 6AL in my XB. It runs great but, the car keeps running after I turn the key off. The instructions say I have to slap a diode inbetween the voltage regulator and the charging light. Just wondering where exactly is the regulator and if they are referring to the ALT light?

Thanks,
Matt

regulator is alternator (or part of it), iirc

so yes, they would mean ALT light

So maybe I could put the diode in the small wire that connects to the back of the alt that controls that light?

well, all a diode does is stops current coming back, so it can't hurt anything that i can think of! :P

Thats what I was thinking, I'll give it a go tomorrow and see if it stops with the key or if I need to take the main power off the ignition unit again.

i don't see how that would make a difference - the voltage that goes to the light would be nowhere near enough to keep the engine firing lol

Well apparently it is, thats what it says to do in the instructions. It says that the 6AL needs stuff all voltage to run and thats enough to do it.

yeah, the diode on the alternator light wire will solve it, use a 1N5404 diode, with the striped end facing the alternator.

Top stuff, engine turns off! Seems the diode in the ALT wire directly off the alternator did the trick. This multispark ignition is great, more power, smoother, easy starting, now to start playing with the advance curve.

Thanks for the help.

My EA used to stay on after I turned the ignition off and removed the key, I never thought someone else would experience the same wierd problem

Advance curve, use the black bush, and one light silver and one light blue spring. Set your base timing at around 16 degrees and go from there

hmmm this may be off topic a little but is it worth having a MSD if you have a stock engine?

I am planning on putting in extractors and a cam in...but not sure if it is worth chucking in a MSD.

cheers
