You were right.. limp home mode is only for the transmission.

There are a few "Limp Home" modes I am aware of...

one for the auto
one for the MAF (V8's only)
one for the cooling system (AU I6 Only)

There are probably some more?

limp home mode
2 i know of!

auto trans... P, R and 2nd gear only when there is a drama with the box ( ie loss of pressure/oil ) allowing u to get home

aui6 cooling , when the car gets too hot due to loss of coolant the ecu shuts down cylinders to allow travel to get car repaired, not on xr or lpg vehciles

even the distributor has LHM (which is the stupid IMO but thats what they call it)

As far as limp home mode for the engine goes - fom the tech docs -

Limited Operation Strategy - Limp Home Mode (LOS) - In this mode of operation, the EEC-V provides the necessary outputs to allow the vehicle to Limp home, should an electronic malfunction occur in the PCM.
The Ignition Timing is fixed at 0* BTDC
The canister Purge is locked out
The Injector pulse width is fixed (Fuel flow constant)
For 6 cylinders, the Idle speed controller duty cycle is set to 75%
For V8s, there is no ISC duty cycle.
This gives a very rich engine characterised by black smoke from the exhaust.
Vehicle performance in this mode is substantially degraded although it may be driven up to 100Km/Hr

Check the battery connections, possibly a bad earth, or connection to the positive bus bar. You should also check the fusible links and relays near the battery, chances are something got disturbed when the lights went in causing the intermittent fault.
