When you say fill up with gunk are we talking coolant gunk or gas gunk (whatever that could possibly be)?

Cheers TW. That's rather interesting! Never seen a converter with a drain plug so it's meant to be mounted verticle. Thanks for the heads up on that. 
I've got a couple of impco's here for my panel van, a lovarto (sp?) in the torana and a poliauto in the ford, but the ford isn't a traditional converter. Cheers ToranaGuy
