My first thought is a faulty tank sender. Use a variable resistor on the gauge wire at the tank and see if the fault is still there or see if someone has a spare cluster to swap to test the weather the gauge is faulty.
What happens after the reading dies if u switch off the key and turn it on again? Is there a time delay after turning it off before it will do it again?

In my ED when the key is turn to either acc or engine start, the fuel gauge climbs to what ever the level is and then dies and doesnt come back on, also the kilometres left shown on the trip comp are none. does anyone have ideas as to wat can cause this? :?
