Ive searched through this forum and can't see what ECU mods people have done with cars running big rwkw or rwhp figures.

Ie been discussing big engine work with ITS + turbo work.

What do people think of the Wolf 3D ECU and the price of one to be configured, tuned and installed for $2500 (Thi is for the WOLF 3D Plus 4)..

...also how this make compares to other brands in the $1000 - $2500 price area.

Currently the car is pretty much stock as a rock .... EFII XR6

For about the same price or less you can get an EMS8860 from a guy in Perth with an adaptor loom to plug straight into the EECIV ecu plug. The 8860 can also control the auto too and has wide band auto tune function. I think he was selling the setup with base program for ~$1800. He is doing a turbo ED now so he would have a good starting map.

Wolf seems to work for me... really they will all do a decent job of tuning a road car, just buy what you can afford.
poeple that say brand x is crap and only bla bla is worth using are talking rubbish... and programable ECU is only as good as the mapping you put into it. I can very easilly adjust the the Wolf to make it run like crap... the tuning is so so important.
Bubget a grand plus on tuning/dyno time if you are not tuning yourself, most poeple just get the shop to set it up and do a few quick tunes... they need more

There are quite a few high powered falcons running the EMS8860 but I have also heard some bad stories about them from others (which is partially why I didn't go for one), but as Chef said it mainly comes down to the tune. There are also a number of people running Wolf, Haltech and Motec ($$$) systems around here all seem to have decent results. IMO find a good tuner and then go with whichever one they like / recommend, that way you will probably get the best tune, oh and don't skimp on dyno time.

yeah, still waiting on the closed loop and staged injection/ignition on the 8860

there a awsome unit with more features to poke a stick at, but as ppl have said, its all up to what map you put in and the tuner...

but as units go, the 8860 for the price is hard to look past

Several mechanics have told me they refuse to fit the EMS 8860 into a late model car cause it will not comply with emissions cause of the lack of closed loop control. Just a thought there before you rush out and but one of these things.

Except for Motec and Autotronic I think currently most aftermarket ECUs are not closed loop, and it would not mean jack if they had closed loop anyway to EPA, that is if they decided to crack down. If it isn't factory and you can play with it, they won't like it.

Unless you have an engineers report, it passes emission testing and is password protected. This chap I work with has it all in writing from the RTA and EPA. The big issue is that its password protected by an official agent of the ecu manufacturer.

so does that mean only the manufacturers agent can access the unit?
I was told by the RTA that they cant be used... it would be good if all RTA workers had the same facts.
