How do you check this when the timing cover only has the TDC mark on a EL (checked 2 engines, both same).

el is not like ea to ed 10 deg .... el is o deg / tdc..

no, not really...
an example... el base timing is 0 deg btdc, now say the ecu timing map at idle is 20 deg btdc. well the ecu knows the base timing is at 0 deg, so it now adds 20 deg to get the 20 deg btdc at idle... now if you set the base timing on the el ecu to 10 deg btdc, the ecu still thinks its at 0 deg. so it now still adds the 20 deg at idle thinking its running at 20 deg.. but really its now at 30 deg btdc... so it will probably ping bad under load and run fairly crappy.. now you can advance it 2 deg or so to get better throttle responce but 10 is to much.. now the eb ecu base is 10 deg btdc, so the eb ecu only adds 10 deg to get the 20 deg at idle.. i hope that makes sense??? |

I always thort that the marking on the EL was 10deg BTDC.

Dont forget to put it into diag mode, otherwise the ECU will be constantly changing the timing while you're moving the dizzy around

I got a timing light but it's really old. When I set the timing with it (using the timing mode via shorting the end 2 pins) it's way advanced. Setting by ear seems to be ok but it will 'pink' on startup from cold.
Anyone have any ideas? |

did you wait 2 mins after starting it with the pins bridged,as the el ecu goes into timing mode after 2 mins..

yea.. ea to ed you have to do it within the first min or so, but el you wait 2 mins then you have 2 mins to adjust it..
not many people realise including some mechanics, that the el is different.. |
