Hey,

Lately i have been wondering if the 3.2l crank would fit in a later model sohc I6 such as a ef 4.0l? Will a 4.0l flywheel bolt up safely to a 3.2l crank as the 3.2l is a 3 bolt and the 4.0l is a 6 bolt? Would i have to just use the 3.2l flywheel, clutch and pressure plate? Will this work with the ef bell housing

Is it possible to use ef pistons with the 3.2 rods? or do i have to use both the 3.2 rods and pistons so i dont smash the head, after all this would it better just to use the whole 3.2 engine and chuck it my ef, but i have read the ef block is better to use

I am pretty sure the blocks are the same and the crank should fit into a 4.0l just want some conformation.

Curious to know if this is a way to make a high reving I6, sorry for all the question

Cheers Michael

DUDE.....why would you bother.....haven't you heard that there is no substitute for cubes????
The 3.2 has bugger-all torque for starters.....just keep with the 4.0, all 4.0

You will certainly get a freer reving engine as the 3.2 is an oversquare engine unlike the undersquare 3.9 / 4.0 litre . You will however lose the good torque charecteristics of the larger lazier engine .

The exact thought has crossed my mind too.
I reckon a 3.2 spinning up to 7500rpm would be awesome.
The loss of torque could easily be overcome with some form of forced induction.

Some difficulties that may be faced in a build like this are:
- Finding a crank to begin with
- The longer rods may pose a strength issue
- HLA's at high revs
- Finding suitable pistons

I know its less power and torque i have read up on the engine it's got 90kW @ 4000RPM to the 120kW @ 4250rpm of the 3.9l, the torque is 235Nm @ 3250 rpm to the 3.9l's 311Nm @ 3250rpm. it only looks s**t because it only revs to 4000rpm when it should be capable of 8000rpm

If i do this it will not be a NA engine it would be boosted because you know the replacement for displacement is boost, and the higher revability will make up for the lack in torque.

but imo if you do the same to a 4.0l you will still make more power and torque and wont have to rev the guts out of it to do it....

the only down fall I can think of mech wise is hoping the rockers can hold up to heavy valve springs @ super high rpm...
ive seen these rockers break with heavy spring @ 6000rpm..

yeah i know about the rockers would get rid of the HLA's and go solid billet rocker gear i have seen them on the web they would be pretty $$$ tho

Will go to the wreckers to see if any of the '88 ea's they have are the 3.2l

The bore size is smaller in the 3.2 compared to the 4.0 and i think the pin height in the piston is higher in the 3.2 compared to the 4.0 which would make the piston well above deck if the 4.0 piston was used. Which might not be that much of a problem if you have enough clearence with vavles and the head itself, but it would probably raise the comp ratio a lot.

I believe the rods should be strong enough, if i go ahead with this i wont be chasing 400rwkW maybe down the line but for now its more a proof of concept to see how well it goes NA and Boosted
