Over the last 2 days I've upgraded my exhaust. I've gone from a diff dumped 2 1/2" mandrel bent system with Pacey Comps extractors (4480?) to a universal metal hi flow cat converter Lukey bullet resinator (hotdog approximately 50cms long) and Ultraflow offset straight through muffler to now a 3" system.
For the 3" system we cut the flange off the Pacey comps, flared out the pipe and welded on a 3" flange. The system is also dumped at the diff, and consists of a Lukey Bullet Resinator (approximately 70cm long) then a Lukey Race Series Stainless Steel centre to centre straight through muffler. The few slight bends that are in it are press bent.

The 2 1/2" system sounded awesome, but the 3" just sound horrid, despite larger (length wise) mufflers. It's extremely loud too - even just under 1/4 acceleration. The mufflers are of very similair design and the same manufacturer so I don't think they would make much difference.
My Magnaflow cat converter hasn't arrived yet, so I guess I won't be driving the car for a little while, I'm hoping this quietens down the noise somewhat.

I guess having a turbo sitting in the exhaust has quiet an effect on the noise too. Maybe I'll have to get one next...

Why go bigger, and why dump the exhaust at the diff?? You would be surprised how quieter it would be if you had complete system to the rear bumper..

Sounds horrid??......must be the mufflers and resonator?? get rid of the resonator is my advice.

I thought my 3" system was a bit loud, but now the mufflers have settled a bit, it sounds quite good, and not overly loud (driven past highway patrol) not so much as a look.....

Failing that, get your turbo on, or go back to old system......

Went bigger to help the exhaust breath better. With the supercharger on there and the new donk hopefully to be in soon she should start putting out a bit. Stoped at the diff as it means I can avoid all the bends in the tailpipe. As such the pipe is pretty much straight from the extractors. Bends don't help exhaust gases flow - probably don't effect much, but every little bit helps. Also, the tailpipe used to rub on my tyres on my Simmons.

Removing the hot dog will only make it louder.

I reckon I'll let it settle for a while, install the cat converter and then reassess. If still too loud I'll probably remove the hot dog and put in another centre to centre straight through muffler or a normal style straight through resinator as there a fair bit more effective than a hot dog.

Not going back to the old system, that'll mean less power. It's also being fitted onto my Land Cruiser which has a 2H diesel 4.0L I6 in it.

Nah, I don't, the neighbours are home so I can't do it now or they'll start winging.
Trying to figure out how to do it though. Will my mobile (Nokia 6220 Classic) do a decent recording?

if it were my car i'd get rid of the lukey mufflers, as from past experience they dont sound as nice as other brands... but thats just my opinion. best of luck with it :)

I'd have to completely disagree. The best systems I've ever heard all have Lukey mufflers. But I'll admit there extractors are crud.

each to their own mate, it's what makes modifying cars more interesting :)

would be a good idea, should sound a bit better to, and would give you very similar flow to a single 3.5"...

Would weigh more, cost more, and possibly starting to be overkill for a 9psi set up...

Twin 2.5 would flow a little bit more than a single 3.5in, which is pretty big for a supercharged i6. Forgive me if I am wrong but I am assuming under 250rwkw (again forgive me if expecting more). Even over this 3.5 is fairly large.

I would try changing from a straight offset muffler to something else. I have used the Aerochamber mufflers before and thought they sounded quite good, although not especially quiet.

Here is some interesting info, obviously on US brands but nevertheless a good comparison.

Thats a very helpful list there skidder. I thinking of going the magnaflow muffler for my system.

In all, Im wanting what twr7cx has discarded. Except I want the tail pipe added.

4480's, 2.5" metal core hiflow cat, 2.5" mandrel, hotdog, magnaflow straight offset muffler, resi, then tip turned down to look similar to dump pipe. Tail pipe painted black, no tip. finishing before the rear bumper.
