hey all

car transmission has died, and aftrer much delibertation ive decided that modding cars has a lower priority right now than things like house, job etc. so im flogging the tractor off which means i need a replacement
guy i know has a mint NCII lane with a 5L in it, thats apprently f**k (siezed motor)
he wants SFA for it
so my question is, what do i need to change it from V8 to a 6, obviously motor and computer, gearbox/shaft? how hard is it/how long would it take, and what are the legalities or re-regestering it as a 6. keeping in mind it hasnt had rego for 3 years and will need a blue slip

thanks

Dude if you want to sort other s**t out now instead of playing with cars just throw a good running second hand box in the tractor and drive it.
You have already spent a mint on it you have no hope of ever getting back and then in the future when you decide that you want to play cars again you will be forking out AGAIN to get back what you sold for f**k all.
There is no such thing as a cheap conversion and when you do one and then put a car back on the road after a long stay off it there will be things to sort out.
It always seems to be the less cash you have the more s**t f**k up and you have to replace it.
Just fix the tractor and run with it.

my only concern with doing that is that the gearboxes will contniue to go because the motor has work and so does the diff, so i figuree the weak link must be the box. it started slipping a little, and within 30 mins of driving it had totally s**t itself. 2nd hand boxes arent too dear relativley but to keep having it on and off is what i worry about
though in saying that 3 years off the road would have caused a lot of degredation of minor (and most likely fiddly) bits and pieces
hmmm...back to the drawing board on this one. ta for the advice

have you checked it out?
3 years is not a lot if the car was under cover and the motors for these have dropped in price second hand
hell i got offered a "rebuilder" 4 years ago for 300 bucks
it may be a option til you can get your finaces in order and fix your box problems properly

apprently the car has been semi-underover, but a lot of the exterior rubber is flaky and dried up, but the interior is pretty much mint, just dirty/dusty, and the body is straight as. the bay is nasty at first, but its mostly the bonnet lining coming down and some cobwebs. id assume that a lot of the rubber components may have to be replaced, if i go ahead with it

trust me dude, the work you have done to your engine will not kill a good auto box..
a good auto box can handle up to and sometimes over 200rwkw..

more than likely your old box was tired to start with or had poor service history..
i think you should just hunt down a good box..

a good one at least.
either they are in short supply at the moment, or 400 is the going rate for a 4sp?

The cost of a new/reco replacement box will still be cheaper then trying to convert the V8 to 6cyl.
just fix your car.

that's about the going rate. a new one is over $1600 you can't expect a used one to be $100

i have no need for any more parts cars atm
so how can someone justify $400 just for the box?
if you got the room you might want to check out the damaged auctions
