When I first got my XG I took off the clutch fan and fitted the 16 inch Davies Craig fan and had nothing but trouble.
So I installed a EL radiator which is not as difficult as some people think BUT you have to remove the A/c or at least modify where the filter dryer sits and the metal pipes that go to and from it.
Then installed the EL fans which is switched on by a Davies Craig thermo switch, now it is great

I just fit a 16 inch thermo fan on my XG because the clutch fan decided that it would sheer off the waterpump and went for a little journey through my fairly new radiator. stuffed clutch, fan, shroud and radiator. I picked up EF/EL thermos to do the conversion but i couldn't even get close to get them to fit after even hacking up the shroud to get it to fit. so that was money wasted. So i got a 16 inch ICE thermo fan from rape-co and rigged it up between engine and radiator and it switches on with ignition so it runs all the time..(till i decide to get a thermo switch). Anyhow it performs just as good as the clutch fan and shroud. (if anything clutch fan was a tiny bit better). Mine is a manual so whether having no trans lines heating up radiator to helps?
I'm up in north qld and it gets hot but it seems to keep it cool......and i trust it won't kill my shiny new radiator.

(keep in mind with the ice brand fan it is set up to push air through. to set it to pull not only do you have to reverse the polarity but take the fan blades off and turn them over)
