hey,
have an el fairmont, has had some form of replacment exhaust put on it.. but i do not like it. what i would love is a deep sounding exhaust very much like a v8 rumble to it, not rediculously loud. does anyone know what is a good system to put on it. that can do this or as best to. also if anyone has recordings of of the sound their exhaust so i can have a listen. the last thing i want is to spend good money and have a car that sounds like all the heap of s**t v6 commies getting around.

cheers :P

Hi, this is my exhaust:

http://members.optusnet.com.au/~ksmiley/my_exhaust.3gp

Its a BA but I would imagine would be similar to an EL in sound.

extractors, and a 2 1/2" mandrel bent cat back system. And I later replaced the rear muffler with a resonator cause it was originally way too soft.

all up you need $1000 for a good sounding performance exhaust.

The FACT - An I6 cant sound like a V8 no matter what exhaust you put on it.

In my experience as far as exhaust note goes extractors and cats make SFA difference. All comes down to the muffler. As for rumble - nothing beats cam.

i'd say extractors make a big difference.
for example, pacie comps give a s**t note
stock headers give a less s**t note.

I have a Lukey 2.5 inch exhaust with twin Mufflers, 2.5 Inch Hi Flow cat out of a GTO and a set of Genie Extractors. On Idle it sounds quiet but give it a boot full and it roars, but no a harsh sound. Redback mufflers also sound ok.

To get the right sound you definently need a set of extractors, Pacemakers i believe are the best and for the rumble maybe a cam

Cheers

The FACTS,

I have one of the best sounding exhaust on any e-series 6cyl falcon i have heard.

Get pacemaker 4499 extractors, Hiflow cat 2.5in(yes, a high flow cat does make your exhaust sound better than a modified factory cat) and a 2.5in Redback exhaust with 1 straight through muffler.

I have heard plenty of Lukey 1 muffler cat back exhausts, they are loud but droney and dull sounding.

my car is loud but with a crisp, beefy grunt that makes people turn there heads even when i kick the engine over at the servo.

cheers..

dont worry, i've got a high flow cat, I'm one of the people such as yourself who realise they are important. I've been told by numerous exhaust shops that its gonna be a restriction if you don't upgrade, and theres a guide on one of the other forums and the guy explains their importance there. Now a six may idle like a v8's little brother but when giving it a boot, the best you can hope for is to sound like an m3 like my mate told me the other day.

Think about that mate, an exhaust shop is trying to sell you a $300 cat that you don't want... Of course they are gonna tell you need one... Bottom line is, there is enough people who know what they are talking about saying that the Ford cat is free flowing enough, and it has 2.5" flanges on both sides of the cat, so how can it be a restriction? It's not like its a full performance engine, its gonna make 2/3 of f**k all difference, and is 200-300 bucks you can spend elsewhere if there's nothing wrong with your cat...

like they said though, you're never gonna get a 6 sound like an 8... If you want an 8 buy an 8, u'll never be happy with a 6...

thankyou for that.
i dont want an 8. if i did i WOULD have bought one. i just want to get this sounding more like one.. coz if i put an exhaust on it.. i dont want to sounding like s**t. or i wont put one on at all. thust why i'm askin what ppl have done, seeing what setups offer a LOWER sounding note that does not sound like a tight baffled f@rt.

thanks to eveyone, that has stated what their exhaust sounds like and what it was made up of.
