Ok so a good mate of mine was nearly finished replacing the head gasket on his XH ute and apparently has now accidently dropped a lifter into the sump through what i'm guessing is one of the oil journals/holes. The head is bolted back on and he was just putting the rocker gear back on.
What would be the easiest way to retrive it? He's gonna be mega p****d if he has to remove the engine to get the sump off.........

On saterday i replaced a head gaskit on an EF, and when i removed the rocker gear i had one fall out and drop into the sump, i used a telescopic magnet tool to retreave it, but the head was not bolted on so it made it a bit easier...

Ok that sounds like something good to try.... would it be easier to do with a sump full of oil or an empty one?

when i did it the oil was still in there if you drain the oil the lifter may move and there is less chance of picking it up..

Ok cool, I'll nip over to his house and give it a go.

Cheers for that.

if its in the sump, you can use a magnet to roll / move it towards the sump plug and retreive it from there

If you can't get to it then just leave it there and buy a new lifter, it's only going to sit in the bottom of the sump, it can't go anywhere.

make sure it's in the sump though, I made the mistake once of dropping a lifter, no idea where it went. Thought it must be in the sump, put another lifter in started her up and lifter got into the gears at the front somehow. 1 bottom end later and it was all good again

But yeah if it's in the sump it will be fine, it's too big to get through the oil pickup.

Its all good, he went and got a telescopic magnet thingo and he got it out first go. Unfortunately though shortly after one of the rocker gear bolts snapped off in the head :? Oh well shouldnt be too much drama to get out.
