And BUMP.

Well today Leroy and had a go at the power steering and the head. Power steering refuses to come apart from the head, though we seem to have undone all the bolts.

We got to head bolt number 9 and it did round slightly. Since then we were unable to get the socket to sit right, and stop rounding the bolt.

Any recommendations on how to get it out? It simply won't budge, just keeps on rounding.

Thanks again to Leroy, really appreciate him coming all the way to South Brisbania to lend a hand and drop off parts for the head gasket change.

have the same prob on 2 bolts

7 & 4 by the guide

option 1

if you you have a welder there weld another bolt on top and use that one to undo it

option 2

heat up the old bolt and hammer an old socket smaller than 14mm to it (good luck gettin the bolt out after though)

option 3 (i'm trying this)

clean the bolt and liquid nail a 14mm socket to the sucker (l/n's take time to dry) then be gentle

option 1 it the better idea as you don't kill a socket but the other aparently work just as well


any other ideas?

Liquid nail hey, never heard of those. God it's frustrating, I really just feel like calling a mobile mechanic, but I just can't, lol.

that will work if your willing to remove the cam and stuff other wise you won't get more than a 1/2 turn

liquid nails don't work all that well but trying again with it till i can get my mig or an oxy set home

or find my butane torch

the rocker gear and cam is off.

talking to a guy at work today said maybe a sharp, accurate hit with a hammer may be ebough to break the seal of the bolt head tot he cylinder head. if that makes sense. then may come out easier.

otherwise we cut the bolt head off and it should pull out easy enough after the head lifts off over it.

Hit the bolt hard but make sure its only the bolt you hit.

Other wise just go get a crappy socket from super cheap and weld it on cause you dont want to grind it off.

Why the hell is this thing still off the road???

Use a single hex impact socket, this stops rounding off the heads of the bolts. A 1/4"W(5/16"BSW) socket is between 13mm and 14mm.

Hmmm, I like the sound of that, as there still is a little thread left. I'm guessing only a place like Coventrys would have it though, right?

Dunno, maybe, there's no Coventry's here. You may even have to order it in. House grade building bolts are usually Whitworth. Old pommy thread.

from my inderstanding just a single hex socket, usually a bit thicker than normal.
