We all love our fords, Im sure we all use proper fuel, so if our cars are designed to run on 95 octane and we use 98 octane, should we be advancing the timing to reap some benefits??

What sort of benefit will we see, how do we advance the timing on the i6?

Yeah... standard tune for 91 so if running 95/98 then there are gains to be had upping the timing. Dunno about outright kw but should make better torque throughout the curve... pull harder etc...

Put the ECU into diagnostic mode... wait until revs chill out then adjust the dizzy just like any other car... timing light can be of some help here...

i belive you can get some benifits from advancing the timing a little if your running 98 octane. no sure how much, maybe 4-5kw?

on the |6, as you have an EL, its a matter of puttin the car into diagnostic mode? and using a timing light and turning the dizzy a little.

*edit, beaten by ^ again.. shouldnt you be working or something? :P

The dizzy is that thing that is REALLY f**k hard to get too :P
What the spark plug leads plug into.
Diagnostic mode for EA-ED is done by connecting the upper and lower far left pins, on the diagnostics port under the fuse panel.
Alternatively you can earth the top left pin somewwere if you can't join the two clips together.
When they're connected, start the car.
Revs will pick up for a bit, then drop back down.
Once it's dropped down, you can set the timing.
It's the same basic theory for EL's, except I'm not sure if the diagnostic mode thing is the same.
And all you suckers with EF 4L's can't do it!! Ha ha ha!

You can advance it 2 degrees and your power curve will be smoother IE no bumps, smoother acceleration.

you can advance it a s**t load, especially once you have a good cam in there aswell, factory they are set at 10 deg. with mine i have had it running at 22 deg on optimax, no pinging and drives great.

even right now with no extractors, std exhaust, and normal 91 RON ulp i am still running it at 18 deg, still no pinging. (but not the std cam).

i would have thought you could at least go to around 14-15 deg with the std cam running premium unleaded.
