hey guys, i've got an EBII (probably irrelevant) and i'm wondering if advanced timing could cause a misfire under (and only under) 2000rpm.

my car is dual fuel and on LPG i tried advancing the timing (without a light, just by guessing) to see if any gain could be had. i found out that it didn't do anything so i put it back to stock position (where it was before i changed it which i took careful notice of and also might or might not be stock, but it ran good there before). lately i've noticed that my car misfires under 2000rpm, worse when its cold and i would really mind except for the fact that it shunts the whole car around when it does it (when i'm driving that is). it does it on petrol and on LPG (not nearly as bad on LPG) so i thought the only thing that can affect both fuels is timing. i've also converted my car to a manual so it might have been always been doing it, but the torque converter in the auto took it up so i didnt notice.

my car also runs pretty rich on petrol but thats another story.

SLABZ! the EA i just squashed into a cube (Now THATS another story) used to do that, especially under load ie accelerating up a hill. I found the distributor used to keep moving ever so slightly over time and worked its way out either too advanced/retarded and this caused the engine to pop occasionally, i also found that the power was down over normal engine timing. Did you try the old disconnect the battery trick. try that and leave it disconnected for a few minutes and see if that helps.

Apparently in the ea setup it needed to be put into timing mode and set with a light, after which the ecu takes over the majority of the timing advancement etc.. probably the same principle with the eb2 but youd have to check your manual

Good luck mate, i got an ef now, so i dont have to worry bout timing issues he he

mine is fine under loads, etc. just runs a bit wooly when its cold and pop under 2000rpm. i scored 139.5rwkw so i dont think performance is down...

yup, playing around with the timing too much can cause it to miss fire..

thats it alted, the TFI module can cause problems, or the distributor itself.

i actually dont know exactly what my fuel economy is like because i havent been able to put a full tank of petrol in, in one hit (i'm a pov uni student).

although i did get 8.9L/100km on a 110km freeway run and thats with 3.89 diff gears and a stg1 cam. around town my trip usually reads 13-15L/100 depending on driving style... unlike the other night when i had 31L/100 and a avg speed of 20km/h :P that was pure hooning. one thing that i have noticed is that when i switch to LPG, my distance to empty still goes down (like its still using a tiny bit of fuel) and on really bad cases, when you swap to LPG - it wont run becuase it double fuels (LPG and Petrol both on full at once). this makes me think i've got a bung injector or pressure reg..
