First of all, warm the engine to proper operating temperature. Then short the two terminals on the far left of the diagnostic plug to each other. ie. the top left and bottom left terminals. The idle should change telling you it's in setting the ignition timing mode. You have about a minute to adjust the timing before it goes back to normal timing. Adjust timing to suit. Obviously don't go too far or it will ping and destroy the engine. The higher the octane in the fuel, the further you can advance the timing.

I'm assuming it's a six cylinder.

If you want to play with the timing, i'd get a vernier cam sprocket. Advance it about 2 - 2.5 degrees, retard the ignition timing a couple of degrees as well. Apparently you may lose abit of low down power, but up top the difference will be alot better. I've got this setup but havent tried it yet. Still set at standard timing, but i'm gonna give it a go one of these days.

If you advance the cam timing, you get more torque lower in the rev range...if you retard the cam timing, comes in later.

I'm looking in to advance my timing but I'm a bit confused. So if u loosen the dizzy cap while the car is running couldn't you get shocked  ?

But then if u turn the car off it wont be in base timing.

I'm thinking u have the car running in base mode and loosen the dizzzy and turn it anti clockwise to advance being careful not to get zapped lol

if you get zapped, you need new leads.

I've had look at the dizzy and I can't see the 13 mm nut to loosen it, unless it's under the dizzy cap, if I take that off won't the car stop running ?? :?
I understand everything else just not how to loosen the dizzy

One method (maybe not the preferred one) of adjusting the timing: Advance it a little, then test for ping by flooring it under full load (eg, uphill) at low revs. If it pings, go back a little and you're done. If it doesn't ping, advance it some more and test again. It's crude, but effective, and should be quite safe if you advance in small steps.
