Damn it after the car backfired like 4 times the other week, i just happened to notice that the intake tubing (pictured in gallery) has blown apart! :x

Went around to a few places to see what i could get done in replacement to it and the best ive come up with is a mandrel bent 180 degree bend into the same kind of piping i have now which then goes into the air box.

Not sure on price yet but it was gonna be under $110 none the less.

Has anyone else got some ideas for me.. :)

Probably cheaper to go to a wreckers and get the stock number again...

How did it blow apart? Got any pictures?

It blew apart due to old age and the backfiring from LPG :roll: I really need to get the backfiring sorted out first. i was told by a wrecker down here to look for the EL intake insted of the EF.

Well i cant get anything down here so it looks like ive got to go to lonsdale then. damn it!!!!

LOL i would post up pics but ive had to tape up the pipe so dirt etc doesnt get into my TB.

Nah, I've actually had a few attempts at making m own piping, so far I've spent about $50.00 total on it.
Here's some pictures.

Now the first one is 'Attempt 1', it's 2 1/2" exhaust piping press bent. Didn't work out well, looks ugly, 2 1/2" is too small, and being press bent it gets even smaller on the corners. (cost $15.00 for the materials and use of the bender).

Second attempt involved purchasing a meter and a half of 3" exhaust pipe ($10.00 or $15.00). And a meter of 3" flexable tubing that could withstand the heat. The one I chose has a wire coil running through it aswell.
Just cut the metal with a disc grinder and hack saw to size. I found some old tin and bolt to make a bracket which is pop riveted on. And drilled a hole and attached the PCV tube or what ever that tube is that comes out of the rocker cover and spits oil into the air intak.e I just reused the large hose claps from the original EL intake to attach the flexy hose to the ehxuast pipe.

Now my current version (3) is basically the same as 2, but I've changed the length of the metal pipes and got a nice corner going with the flexable tubing. Also polished the metal up witth some Autosol Metal Polish. When I get around to it, I'll bell out the one side of the shorter metal pipe so that it fits more snug into that original intake peice.
I've also fitted my plug from my bathroom into the top of my air box lid, and attached a peice of string. Now this also gets blown out when the car backfires (scott840 told me to do it yonks ago). Since my air box lid is on spring clips, when the car backfires you can actually here it poping off and hitting the underside of the bonnet!
I needa get a picture of this one some time.

One thing to note is I started with the chared remains of an EL intake, not EF one. All you'd need is that rubber corner peice with Ford on it though, wouldn't be hard to get.

Since doing all this some time last year I've had one major huge backfire (plenty of normal/minor ones though), and this one again blew through the flexable tubing on the corner. But like I said, I bought a meter of the stuff, so I had plenty spare to replace it with!

For my 4th attempt, I'm thinkling about having a mandrell bent corner made up and welding it onto the two exhaust pipes to replace the flexable tube. But my problem with doing this is that next time I have a huge backfire, instead of blowing apart my flexy tube, it'll blow apart my air filter, and if your like me your running an K&N air cleaner and you don't really want that blown apart!

if you replace it with the stock item, drill 4 15mm holes around it, remove the bottom of a stubby holder, and slip it over the pipe to cover them, stops (hot) air getting sucked in through them, and when it backfires, lets it all out.

Yeah something like that may be what i need to do. BUT only problem is that i need to sort out my backfiring problem first, as i dont want to split open any more intakes. so once i have that sorted out that, then i can make up a suitable intake.

deffiently get the el part that goes to the tb, thing with ford on it. as your is gas you'll also need a donut with thread on the pipe so it can be bolted to the intake otherwise it will not sit right.

Lots and lots of tricks for this problem.

1. Change your spark plugs every 5000 km - They dont last as long on LPG.
2. K+N Airfilter is usually fine. However, replace the Airbox clips with a just-tight bungy strap. When the car backfires you hear a thud which is the box lit hitting the bonnet, but no blowing to bits.
3. You can put a sprung flap on one surface of your airbox for the pressure to escape out of. That works pretty well as well.

You really do not ever get backfiring unless your mixtures suck, or you neglect your ignition system. I used to get one little pops, and that was the sign to swing into the auto store and get new ones. I took it a little easy off idle until I got the new ones in.

Yeah well the reason it started backfiring was due to replacing the plugs, i changed them over to genuine ford ones. But the thing that has got me stumped is the gap of them, mabe they arent gapped properly.. I dunno, and i definately need new leads now, that might contribute to the problem.. but yeah its getting looked at this week so hopefully that all gets sorted out. :)

For back firing you might have fitted a lead up wrong.
By the look at the attemps of intakes it might have been better to get one of the XR8 dismantler when he had some for sale.
