Gday ive got a bf xr6 and its being real tempremental about starting sometimes it will sometimes it wont, im pretty sure its the alternator because it wil start if i put a fully charged battery but once i turn it off it wont start again but then it might start if i leave it for a bit. Could it be a fault wire or something of the like?? its only done 69000k and i dont think it should be fouling up. Has anyone else had this problem?? Any suggestions?

Cheers

I'd say it's more likely the battery which is at fault. Batteries tend to fail more in the colder weather. Hence it may start once the weather has warmed up a bit. It doesn't take much temperature difference to make alot the difference.

i was told that if you go and start the car, wait about 30 minutes, thenpull the positive or negative terminal off the battery and see if the car still runs.

if it does, your alternator it fine, start looking somewhere else.

if the car dies as soon as you disconnect one of the terminals, then it is your alternator that is dead.

i cant guarantee that it will work as i have not tried it myself.

thats not a good idea...
removing the battery terminal while the engine is running can cause a voltage surge and stuff the ecu,bcm ect..

in older non efi cars this can be ok...

best way to check your alternator mate is get a multimeter put in on your battery while its running and turn on your air/c full on and high beams it should be showing over 12v around 12.5-14v and then if you think battery get a hidrometer and check the cells or get an auto spark to load test it a battery can drop a cell and you cant tell until you get it open

Another thing mate people don't relise is that if you battery drops to about 35% charge or below the alternator won't be able to charge it back to 100% until you bang it on a battery charger

depending on the battery though, you might not be able to open it to test with a hydrometer.

What EL power said is the best way to check the Alternator.

Would not be unheard of that a new battery is a dud. They do tend to sit around n the shelf for a long time.

Those are definitely the symptoms. I wouldn't of thought a BF alternator would have failed already. The car cant be that old. Take it to a mechanics shop. They should be able to load test the battery and tell you if it's any good.
