Well, now that my previous head is my car now, I gotta do another head. This one is an EF unit, 94AB, had it sitting out on the veranda for a couple of years, so now its up for a bit of work for my new engine. I'm just about to start.
The funny thing is, the hole in the genuine exhaust manifold gasket, is the same size as the head on the ex valve.

On that other head you put on your car, what is the thing under where the valves are. The j shaped thingy, and how come this head doesn't have one ? Is that the 'swirl chamber' I have heard people talk about ?

The first head is off an EA. Only the 3.9's had that. Was deleted with the intro of the 4.0's. It isn't really a "swirl chamber", more of a guide to produce a swirl.

I have just finished polishing one combustion chamber. Took about 2 hrs.

y didn't u lay bak the chamber around the valves on the opposite side to spark plug? gains to be had there

Not doing it for turbo, N/A, Hypereutectic raised pistons going in. Looking at 10:1 to 10.5:1 comp. ratio.

The head is going to be shaved as well?

Looks good so far, It'll be interesting to see what it'll do.

again why didn't you lay back chamber around the valves? if you are using domed pistons the 2 or 3cc gain in chamber size wouldn't matter anyway.
but the flow gain would be well worth it.

seems like alot of time and effort for a gain or 3/8th of f**k all

So looking at those pics the intake valve looks like it goes up pretty close to the surface of the head, so how much can you shave off before having issues? hard to see exactly from the pics just how much room there is.

Also the valves look like they are concaved... does anyone make valves with a flat bottom to them for a bit less overall CC volume? Unless there is a proper reason they need to be concaved in like that?

I finally got back to it this arvo. I have done the exhaust port now. I have made it the same size as the genuine exhaust gasket as seen in the pic.
