my Ef is ticking with. the ticking speeds up when revs increase and slows down when the revs drop. is it the lifters? or is it my tappets? any one have any ideas and what its gonna cost me to fix.

it could be the HLA (Hydraulic lash adjusters - which most people call lifters) or a noisy injector

I own both a tickford xr8 sedan and ute and both of them had the ticking noise.Once the injectors were cleaned around $100 if he is a good mechanic they were great.Injectors get clogged very easy, and should be cleaned apparently every 10,000km's.

It'll be the HLAs if it sounds like metal on metal tapping... I've got the same problem atm.. and I'm not driving my car til I've fixed it.

It can do damage in EXTREME cases. My mechanic was telling me that one of his customers once had a car that used to tick, did it for about 3 years, and they just let it go. Anyway one day they finally took it to my mechanic. After replacing the hydraulic lifters the car was still making a ticking noise. He re-inspected it all again and actually figured out that the 3 years of driving around with rooted lifters had actually caused the end of the valve stems to flog out, wearing down so that then new lifters didn't take up all the way, and still left a bit of a tick there!
