Hi all,

After some pointers to an issue I am having. This site has been great so far for all my other issues. Now time to ask something I haven't seen posted.

2000 AU Falcon Ute 220,000Km auto trans, fuel only no gas.

Car just out of no where stalled on me. After 5 minutes it started and ran good for 5 minutes and stalled again.

After testing car will start and run for up to 10 minutes and then just stop. Let it sit for a minute or two and starts normal and does the same thing again.

Fuel pump runs the whole time, moments before the engine dies you hear the fuel pump wind up (as it it sounds like it is getting faster) and then it stops the exact moment the engine stops. On idle no cough or splutter just stops.

Have removed battery and reset the ECU and still does the same thing.

Before I go out and buy everything from pumps, ECU's and coils and such – has anyone had this or similar? Or know what could be doing this?

Hi,

As you have had no suggestions I will have a go......... There should be a fuel pressure reg. to keep the rail at the required pressure. If this is failing the pressure will drop, ( most fuel will return to the tank and because of the lower pressure the pump will speed up ) then the engine stalls. Because the ECU sees the engine has stopped it will stop the fuel pump.

This is what I suspect is happening, I gather you dont have a bad fuel line with a leak and a fuel smell ?

No Fuel leaks or anything like that.

I went last night and ran the car for an hour and did not cut out once. Sunday it was cutting out every 5-6 minutes but that was after a long day of running. Thinking it could be heat related I have ordered a new ignition coil due to similar people having issues. Even if this is not the cause a new coil, leads and plugs won't hurt the car anyway. Only just bought it two months ago from a private sale.

The fuel reg is the only other thing i was thinking due to the noise the pump was making by speeding up. Might grab a new one of them as well. Can't hurt I guess?

Hi,

An AU has no coil. The sound of the fuel pump is the thing I would be following up. Throwing a whole lot of parts at a problem can create new ones. Just my opinion though.

Hi,

Yes they have Coils, not a single one though. No single point of failure. The sound of the fuel pump is what I would be looking into rather than replacing other parts on a guess.

I have the new ignition coil module - yep probably not the fault but got a new one anyway.

So replace the fuel pressure regulator?

Hi,

I would try a 2nd hand one and see how you go. A workshop will have a pressure tester, but a cheap 2nd hand one would be a start. I see many Posts where people spend a fortune on parts they dont need. When I read your Post I thought with the noise of the pump it is most likely a fuel issue. When you turn the ignition on the pump will start, if the pressure drops because of the valve the pump will go faster. With low pressure the engine will stall, and as a safety thing the pump will cut out. This is so that if in a crash and a fuel line is broken it wont pump petrol everywhere. As I said, I dont have an AU but from what you have described it is the first thing I would change. Many people throw a handfull of parts at a problem then make a mistake and introduce a 2nd problem. I have sorted out a few " problem " cars over the years......

crank angle sensor gave me the same problems as you have. Was worse when car was hot or under load.

I had the same problem on my AU ute a couple of years ago. It ended being the fuel pump on its way out.

Did you solve the problem yet - Change the O2 sensor and tell me if it makes it better.
