G'day all,

I've got myself an '03 BA XT with 117000 kms on the clock. Everything functions well except it makes a few noises that it probably shouldn't.

When I start it up from cold, it knocks for a few revs and then dissapears.

When I approach 1500 rpm there is a vibrating sound that comes from the front. I think this is just the heat shield vibrating at the right frequency.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to reduce/fix these noises?

Thanks in advance

The first noise would probably be the crank knocking before the oil pressure gets up. Try a thinner oil. 5W-30 Etc.

And you might be right about the heat shield.

When i next change the oil I might try that. I haven't changed it since I bought it so I don't know what exactly is in it, probably some cheap rubbish, it was a fleet car after all. :P

Might find that just some better quality oil will do the trick.

the exhaust heat shield on the cat will be rattling. One of the mounts will be snapped off the exhaust. rip off the heatshields, reweld the mount to the exhaust and refit the heatshields using new clamps..

If it was a fleet car, its more than likely been serviced properly by Ford.

I've had two ex fleet wagons (EA & BA) and they were both serviced by the book by Ford dealers. However the EL I bought from a private seller and he gave me a mish mash collection of torn service receipts from different workshops. Incidentally the EL was less reliable than the EA.

So not unusual at all.

Well it gets serviced soon so hopefully some of these problems just dissapear.

One time my dad put premium unleaded in our skyline wagon (back in the day) and that stopped it running rough after multiple visits to different workshops.

Sometime these things don't take much at all to sort out.

Ahh thanks xpression. I was wondering if someone would come back to me with something more definitive on that.

What type of clamps do you need...do they get broken when you take the heatshield off?

Coz yeh...the more beans you give it, the more it rattles...lol...and ive been giving it some of that lately as I get more used to the car. It's nice to drive compared to my parent's bulky 2000 model Explorer XLT.

I wasn't thinking you were. I agree with what you say about some ford service departments, but they are usually just as bad for private owners also.
One reason why I will never take my car to Wignals in Frankston.

Jeez, I hope it's not. That would be getting me a touch worried about the lifespan of my motor.

Wouldn't it be more likely a lifter waiting for oil pressure?
