hey guys, last week i got my new dev 5 hybrid head and cam from JMM and ive just finished putting it on my el and since i started it its been making a really bad whining noise from the front of the engine over 2000 rpm. it happens as soon as it revs over that but when its below it i cant hear it, the engine sounds a little louder than before but i dont think too much.
All i can guess at the moment is the cam or the adjustable gear.
It also has alot less power than i thought it should have, although im just hoping that its because i havnt dialed in the cam yet.
any help or things to look at or for would b great thanx

are you sure you got it on tdc when you fitted.

did you slip a tooth on the chain?

as a cam can do very odd things when advanced or retarded a tooth.

get the motor to tdc, and check that the cam gear points 90'

since when do you have to get tdc? dont you just have to line the hole and the d**k up on the cam and the gear?

I have the same problem and so does another dude who posted earlier this week.

It seems harmless, ive had mine for a while now, it annoys me but its becoming one of the noises.

if anyone finds out what it is give us a bell.

Does yours seem to spit fuel out the back too? i notice it on my rear bar cause m y cars white. seems to spit a fair bit.

From the topic I was going to ask if you tilt your head away from the passenger seat does the whine go away but after reading the rest of the post, it might be a blocked oil passage leaving a bearing running dry..

timing shouldnt be wrong, i didnt adjust the cam gear at all, just lined everythign back up where it should be.

How does one fix it then?

As for oil passage being blocked, i did lose 2 lifters somewhere in the car, did you jcass?

I had 2 lifters fall somewhere and i could never find em again, but if there was a blocked passage id prolly know about it by now, in the form of a f**k engine, cause its been around for a while.

im pretty sure that the timing was right, the only thing that could have made it slip is if it came off the crank when i was changing the gear over, but i didnt think so. i still have to dial in the came so ill try and do that today so that will get the timing right.

im actually thinking it could be blocked oil passage but i dont know how it could have happend.

how do u lose lifters?? lol... u mean the HLA(hydraulic lash adjusters?)??

Best way to isolate noise from the engine or the accessories (tensioner/alternator, etc) is to remove the drive belt and run the engine and see if the noise disappears. Mind you don't take for ever doing this.

round at Jcass's joint yesterday got the cam dialled in (after alot of f*** around!) started her up idled better than the day before, i guess the stock ecu is more used to the cam now, and took it for a 5 min drive round the block, behaved perfect and then when turning back into his street the noise suddenly appeared again but only AS SOON as you hit 2000 rpm, the noise sounds like the chain rubbing on the head or block!
