Hi everyone.
I have a 92 EBII Fairmont with 360k on the clock. Its generally a great car and goes pretty well, but when started from cold, it takes about 10-15 minutes before the volt meter shows the battery being charged. While its warming up I've got time for a cigarette, send some sms messages, check my email and clean the windows :) and thats before I sit in the car and wait until the charge gets to between 13 - 14 volts. Its fine from then on until the next time I start it.
Its had a new alternator and belt fitted about 12 months ago and the charging problem has been happening for about the last 3 months.
Anybody have any ideas? All suggestions greatly appreciated

Thanks

is the alternator still under warranty???

could be a host of problems, you could take it to an auto elec to diagnose the problem and then fix it yourself :)

Other then that, make sure your fan belt is good, (you shouldn't be able to turn the alternator fan by hand)

and obviosly all connections between the alternator and battery, also check the earth strap on the block

it should charge up as soon as it starts.
are you just reading the figure off the volt meter in the car, or have you actually put a multimeter across the battery?

Thanks for the suggestions so far, and yes, I'm reading the figure off the volt meter in the car.
Any idea why the charge light (on the dash) doesn't come on if the charge rate is so slow? The only indication is the negative volt meter reading.

the voltage meters in the car aren't that accurate, my utes drops to 11 volts when it's at 13.8 with the thermo's on, but it goes back up when they switch off....
put a meter across it, it will more than likely be alright.
