hey guys, i'm having some trouble, seems my serpentine belt is rubbing up against the arm on the tensioner. i replaced the tensioner but it isnt lining up with the harmonic balancer so i think the problem may be the harmonic balancer itself. i took a pic and it looks like the harmonic balancer is sticking out too far. it also wobbles a bit when the car is running. any ideas?

Yep.

Harmonic balancer may well be shagged. they have a rubber ring inside of them, which absorbs the vibrations but also holds the two parts of the balancer together. I had the one on my 5L fail, the outer ring of the balancer started to works its way loose. Made a hell of a vibration.

Make sure everything is still bolted in OK... but, have a good look at the balancer. See if you can spot the rubber insert trying to work its way loose...

if the tensioner pulley lines up with the rest of them but not the harmonic balancer, that would mean your harmonic balancer is stuffed.

how would the harmonic balancer affect the engine and how much do they cost?

if the balancer flies off it will create havoc, replace asap!

I remember seeing an EF which IIRC had the belt come off and wrap around the balancer - a couple of seconds caused around $1100 worth of damage.
Seeing the tensioner broken in half was awesome.

So I think you know what to do, and when to do it . . . .

geez thats a familiar site, had to do mine a few months ago on my AU, that was fun..... not.

at least is a bit easier to do on the E-series.

dsheps83 average cost to buy one new is about $100, depends on where you go

breaker bar and wedge it between the chassis and hit the key. just make sure it's not gonna smash anything in the process, and it's best you remove the radiator.

i put a small bar or screwdriver threw one of the holes in the balancer to stop it from spinning (maybe why mine is stuffed but i doubt it)

to tighten i always use a rattle gun but i assumed that you didn't have access to one?
maybe see how tight you can get it with the breaker bar, start it and run it, then check it a few times to make sure it dosen't loosen off? otherwise the best bet is to take the ring gear inspection plate off and wedge something between the flex plate or ring gear and see how you go.
