Gidday All

Here is a photo of what I have bought.

Image

It is an EL engine and comes with all accessories including the ECU and all the parts needed to complete the conversion. I went and saw the engine while on the Newy cruise last Sunday, and this engine is the cleanest engine I have seen for a while. It started first pop, and was smooth, quiet and best of all, clean out of the exhaust. Those on the cruise know how much crap the current engine is throwing out the back.

I guess over 400k on the engine will do that

I will update as this progresses - hopefully soooooooon.

Yep the EB motor has 400,2800Kms on it.

And while still strong power wise, is blowing blue smoke when you give it a bit, leaks from rear main seal and front of sump, has a wobbly harmonic balancer, and when I changed the head gasket last year, I noted that the water galleries were quite corroded.

For the price I got the EL Engine for I couldn't fix half of the current problems with the EB engine.

Well it looks like the 24th Feb is the big day.

The engine will be at PaulMac's place near Doyalson, so I will be driving up there in the morning and driving back with the EL motor in the car that afternoon. Well that is the plan anyway.

At this point, the engine will be installed and run off the EB ECU first. As my car is non smartlock, I decided to put the EL ECU in later and deal with those sorts of issues after I get the car home. I intend to make the BBM functional when the EL ECU goes in.

This really quite exciting and I am looking forward to cranking her over for the first time with the EL engine in.

I have completed the modified EB Log Manifold loom to suit the BBM. I will have some pictures of this part soon, along with an explanation of the changes I made.

OK, a small update.

The EL Engine has now been removed from the car and is safely at PaulMacs' place. The engine now removed, looks even better than it did in the car. It is really clean, with no signs of leaks or missuse anywhere.

The install date is the 24th Feb. Wooohoooo

One week and counting.

In preparation of the conversion, I have been busy modding the inlet manifold loom. The reason you can't use the EL loom with the EB is because the plugs on the EL BBM loom are square and the EB uses round plugs.

Kudos to Troyman for his guide as much of the knowledge comes from there.

I had a spare loom off the log manifold from my EB parts car. To alter the EB loom to fit the BBM manifold, the TPS and ICS plugs need to be relocated to reach the throttle body on the BBM.

From the wreckers I sourced EL TPS and ICS Loom plugs as they can be different to the EB. I found that the TPS plugs are the same but the ICS plugs are different. Seeing as I needed to cut the plugs off to lengthen the loom I used the newer plugs. It is possible to use the existing EB plugs, so long as you mount the EB TPS and ICS on the BBM throttle body.

Below is the loom before and after I adjusted it. It is now ready to attach to the EL motor.

I intend to take a few photos of the conversion and will post a quick guide and any difficulties encountered.

Small Update

Today I received a Smartlock Bypass Module. I have hooked it up and started the car using a smartlock EBII ECU and an EL Tickford Gas ECU.

I have also added extra pins to the ECU plug for Smartlock, the BBM Solenoid, knock sensor and a wire for the EL Gas ECU to tell it to run on petrol. Using some loom from an EB Bootlid, I ran wires from near the ECU through the Firewall via the hole the vacuum pipes run through to behind the washer bottle.

I have also mounted the BBM Solenoid in its correct location. Unfortunately this is where the the Cruise Contol vacuum pump is located in the EB, so I relocated it down the inner guard by wedging it under the brake lines. This will do for now until I can drill some holes and bolt it in properely. And, yes the cruise still works :D

Everything seems to be falling into place for Sunday, so it should go relatively smoothly.

I just have to wire up the plugs for the BBM solenoid and the knock sensor.

Next update should hopefully be good news re the successful completion.

Regards
BenJ

so this sunday is the big engine change hey...
i bet you cant wait lol...

is your car running with the el tickford ecu at the moment?
im curious if the el ecu,s timing/fuel map made a difference on your current engine without the bbm??

i changed my ecu over to a(tickford engined) fairmont ghia ecu yesterday and all i can say is that there is a nice torque improvement over the std hybrid ecu that i had...it goes to show that the tickford ghia ecu has a similar map to the xr6 ecu..
at 1/4 of the price of the xr one..

Hey Troyman

Yes, I left the EL Gas Tickford ECU in just to see what differences there are. As I understand it, this ECU uses standard petrol maps, but also has optimised fuel maps for LPG. I just made sure the ECU used the petrol maps by sending 12volts to pin 8.

So far I can say that it is lacking below 3800rpm but then pulls harder. I presume this is because the fuel/timing maps don't suit the log manifold below 3800rpm. Other differences noted are that the Power/Economy switch is reversed on the auto, and the auto shift points are different as well as feeling more refined.

It is interesting you comment on the use of an EL Ghia ECU, as I was wondering about that. There was one on Ebay last week for $30. I wish I had got it now. Oh well, will keep an eye out for one in the future.

I also believe there is a benefit from using AU injectors due to the improved spray pattern. You may already be using them as they would have come with your engine, but I will source some for the EL engine in the near future.

Yes, the anticipation is building as Sunday draws closer.

Hopefully we can meet on Friday night at Liverpool.

Regards

BenJ
