Machining will make them nice and smooth again, you can just throw pads on, but they wont be as effective.

yeah there is usually three options:

1) throw pads in and just drive it. good for bombs which dont do any heavy braking and dont want money spent on them.

2) machine discs and maybe even when your there put some new bearings in them or at least repack them. probably cost about $10 a disc for machining.

3) depending on how thin your discs are replacing discs could be an option. sometimes they are pretty darn cheap.

If i understand this correctly, then it sounds like what happends when you have just bled the brakes, if not, then maybe they need to be bled.

u can just replace the pads but alot of guys i know say its best to machine the disc's for 2 reasons:1- Make the new pads grip as best as possible and 2- for longer pad life ( depending on how hard u use them), the old discs are usually worn unevenly.
I used to have an EF and once i got 16" mags on it a had to get the discs machinedyearly due to the disc warping slightly and giving that pulsing/shuddering feeling in the brake pedal.
