My ride is an EL Ghia with tickford 4.0 with all the usual mods, having major problems finding a good sounding exhaust system. First system i bought was a cat back 2.5inch mandrel bent Luckey system just one center muffler and 2.5inch tailpipe, this exhaust sounded shocking with heaps of drone and extremely loud when engine was under low rev load ie. driving slow up a hill. I had a tailpipe muffler cut into tailpipe to help get rid of drone, this was a bid mistake it quietened car down but gave it the worst vacuum cleaner type sound

Next system i tried was Red Back got pacemakers and high flow redback cat fitted, to me it sounded like a pus holden not a nice sound.

I got told to use 2 1/4 inch pipe to give it a nicer crisp note so got muffler shop to make a custom system was 2 1/4 pipe from cat back into a tinny straight thru Mercury muffler with 2 1/4 tailpipe. This system sounded the best so far no drone at all with nice note no truck like note the others had. Only problem is i did feel a top end power loss and now after hearing a new FG XR6 with sports exhaust my exhaust sounds crap

Local exhaust shop owner told me you cant get pre BA 4.0's to sound any good,
if anyone out there knows of a really good sounding performance system please let me know

it's all down to personal taste mate, what you might think is pus, someone might think is awesome..!

it's fuuny you say that the exhaust place said you can't make the earlier 6's sound good..

i've always heard and thought myself, that the SOHC 6's sound a hell of alot better than the DOHC sixes..

if you like the sound of the DOHC 6 then you know what you need to do......
DOHC conversion in the EL!!!!

I wanted an exhaust system with heaps of flow, not too loud, and little to no drone.......no-one makes one.
I made my own, from the Pacie 4480's back. The CAT is from a BMW, cut the ends off, made my own cones, it's as long as the transmission, goes into a twin, side-by-side 2&1/4", into the homemade muffler, then a 2&1/2" dumper.
Its does for what I want.

Hey dude i got 4499 pacies, high flow metallic cat and 2/12 inch redback system. the exhaust was fitted first and sounded like crap, then about 6 weeks later i fitted the pacies and high flow cat, still sounded like crap very tinny, but got told by alot of guys on this forum to wait for the pipes to carbon up and now about 10 weeks later its sounding quite nice no drone, barky note turns heads. that is with 2 high flow mufflers still too. will put hotdog on rear soon and see if its too loud. u gotta b patient and wait for the pipes to carbon up abit.

Wanna make it sound good.............stick a turbo on it..

Those that have heard my car will testify to the nice sound, and not to loud, unless i take the rear muffler off, and even then its not obtrusive.......and still sounds good,...IMHO

Cheers

Daz

You will find a recording on youtube. It was done with a Pentax Optio S10 still camera.
It doesn't do it any justice at all.
It is under the the title of......ED 4.0 std cam, homemade exhaust
Any tips on how to get a better sounding clip????

Yes i do believe it comes down to personal taste, iv had alot of people tell me my car sounds really nice, but myself i like a car to be loud only when im up it, nothing worst then a roar at 2500rpm.

I will try fitting a magna flow muffler this week have herd good things about them. I believe it's possible to get a SOHC 4.0 to sound good just look at the 5.7 LS3's they can sound real nice with an expensive ss system but can also sound so cheap and nasty without the right system

Yes i have been thinking about going forced induction. Im not sure about turbo but, iv seen to many diy turbo kits end in disaster. The Snort supercharger kit for 5k with custom inlet manifold is more my thing would have to change engine not for sure
