Hey guys,
Although i am thinking of getting by BA next year, before i make that step i just want to check something. I got the 88 ea s (CFI) and i do have a soft spot for it. Would it be worth modding up this engine or is it just junk? If possible, what engine mods would be suitable. It would have to recond or something as its done 223,000km's. Or would an engine change be feasable. Also, if you can think of any mods, could you give me a rough price estimate. Thanks.

A MPFI conversion, cheap extractors & exhaust and a regrind cam will make it fly past BA's. Your probably lookin at around $1200 for that stuff.

heh, i never thought it could fly past BA's. I've noticed you've got an awesome car and no what your on about, any tips on where i could get the regrinds and mpfi conversion done. I live in melbourne.

Or, if you're cashed up, skip the MPFI conversion, buy a rebuilt later model engine... EL probably...
And turbocharge the bugger! Or alternatively, save your money, get extractors, exhaust, cams and an edit for the BA.. That would be my choice actually... edit: skipping words...

hmm, so many decisions, i just cant make up my mind. I wish i had enough money to do up the EA and buy a BA.

Trust me, you cam the BA, get an Exhaust and extractors for it, and polish it off with an edit, the EA will more then likely be the f@rt thing from your mind.

To get the EA going you'd want to do what's previously suggested, and throw in a manual trans. I just had my ED converted to manual and the thing is a weapon now, the auto would be miles behind!
I think the question you really need to ask is if you can afford it, is it going to be feasible for you to upgrade to a BA? You probably don't want a big loan on your shoulders at 19. |

If you got a stready job, and can afford a loan, get one. I did 
BA's at auction are dirt cheap. Mate of mine just got a low Km XT for 13k. Also once you've had a loan and paid it off, you'll have a good credit rating, makes it easier to get a house down the road.

Yeh, i was checking out the auctions a while back, i saw a 2004 xr8 60,000km go for $22,900. but i was looking around the 13-14k mark for an xt and am prepared to take out a loan however thought it might be worthwhile checking out other options. So with mpfi conversion, auto-manual conversion, cam regrinds and some pacies and redbacks, what would i be looking at $$$ wise and is there anyone that can be recommended to me that will do these to my car. I just have trouble letting go of the EA, its been so good to me.

First cars do tend to grow on you and you get a soft spot.
My first car was a datsun 120y, had a huge soft spot. Had been in the family for years etc... Doesnt take long for that to dissapear ! |

My first car was an EA Fairmont. Pile of absolute rubbish compared to the EL I got after that, and my current BA is a bigger step again from the EL. Don't bother spending money on crap - put up with it for a while until you can splash out a bit. It's well and truly worth it in the long run.

You bet they can..... I just recently had the head on my EA falcon shaved by a local part from a top job the ole girl now has my BA XTS wondering if i will drive it again lol...
Mods done were race cam with head shaved to 17,000...moves very well now... cost around $710 with gasket and new high tensile bolts. I do reccomend u have it TK tested after u do it to ensure your engine integrity, aand also have the computer remapped...it doesnt always pick up what has been done.... |

Or just pick up an old carby V8 (I presume a Clevo wouldn't fit) and drop that in since you wouldn't have Stupidlock and all that to deal with . Put a hornet scoop on the front (or better still shiny bug catcher on it). Some nice old school wheels, 15", but real fat on the rear, dark tinted windows, drop her real low and she'd be sweeet.
