I had a similar issue; it hesitated for few seconds (ran rough), then was fine for days (or hundreds of km).
As suggested from those here, I changed the plugs and leads, and finally the coil -problem solved.
Unfortunately, you will have to go through things to find out, but starting with the cheapest things, like plugs, then leads, etc., is the most obvious way to go.
Good luck. As you never know if it's gonna just stop, it's a total pain in the a***.

With the ECU resetting, would it be worth while for the OP to just changing the ECU as a cheap elimination option? They cant be too expensive at the wreckers and are cheap enough on ebay and you always have a spare if its not the issue.
Did the OP check today to see if it did it in gear and not in just in drive?

I tried in first gear this morning and it didn't do it, if it did not as much as usual.

Then change the ECU for the sake of maybe $50. There is a tech doc about ECU codes on here and by using that you will be able to see what ecu you need. Either that or if you know someone who has a spare you can try then do that. The ECU is located behind the front passenger side kick panel and an easy swap over.
Unless someone else on here can come up with a better idea? I have only had one EL and it was that stuffed it wasn't worth repairing, so I am no expert.

The ECU should be the last thing done after confirming 100% that all other issues are looked at first. Even then I've rarely heard of an ecu just dying all of a sudden.

MAD had said, "I generally find after an ECU reset it is better for a few days, then gets back in to the habit." thats what led me to the ecu. With all the BCm issues E series have I would think the solder in the Ecu's might do the same. Thats why I went the way of the ECU.
If it only does it in drive you would think it would have to be a tranny related because you still get the same load on the car in 1st as you do in drive. I would have thought to if it was spark related it would do it in other gears aswell

Fair enough. Will be interesting to know what the cause is.
Personally I'd still do ecu after the basics are checked. Your advice is still a possible scenario.

Whilst you're messing around during you're break throw a nice big earth strap from battery to body.
They always need a upgrade.

I ran an extra earth from the starter motor mounting bolt to the chassis rail, and one from the battery earth to the cylinder head.....with a 12V DC system, extra earths doesn't hurt it.

Alrighty I will look into mucking around over the holidays with the ECU and making another earth, one thing I will be doing is getting a sound system over the holidays so another earth would do justice, thanks again.

Tried again today, it hesitates a little in 1st.
The car will only hesitate in first when it is cold.

Sounds like a fluid problem to me. Burn trans fluid or maybe it's a little low. What's the fluid like?

Thats a great point. Sometimes small s**t like that can end up being the problem and its a bitter pill to swallow after spending big dosh on stuff that never needed to be replaced in the first place. Nice one.
