ok ok so.

we have all slowed down with the gears on an auto occaisonally, and for a while i needed to in some emergencies to slow the car down with my old brakes.

now the other day i noticed while going down a hill approaching some lights, i just went to put it in 3...and nothing? no gear drop nothing? can hold gears, still drives, no driving issues?

just doesnt drop down?

safety feature? whats up?

used to drop down?

can still slam it into 2nd for some midtown racing?

just doesnt casually drop down? unless you boot it?

can slam it into 2nd? while not accelerating...and it drops revs to about a 1000rpm and keeps on rolling?

selectors?

ANYONE!!!

There are a couple of things that may cause this.

1st Check all the Auto linkage bushes. If there is excessive play, the neutral switch gets confused.

2nd the neutral switch itself could be worn or at least have a loose plug.

Cheers

You have a problem with the C4 clutch.

The C4 clutch in the BTR is called the coasting or engine braking clutch - It is the smallest clutch in the BTR & wears out very easily when used to "excess". The rest of the transmission will still operate ok but you will not have engine braking.

Xpvanman, Mate, you are the man when it comes to those boxes all right... Maybe you could offer your theories on why they took the fluid level check (dipstick) off the AU models meaning half NZ's AU's are rooted?! Taxi drivers NEVER get that far under their cars, and neither do "careful owner since new" types...

They deleted the dipstick tubes & external band adjustments from the series 2 EF onwards about the same time the stopped mentioning transmission servicing in the owners handbook. Why? Ford reckons the BTR is a sealed unit for life & the oil in it will last the life of the transmission. The 16mm fill plug in the side is for emergencies only - To fill it back up if you blow a hose etc. If the owner can check his oil & notices it going off colour - He'll get it serviced & it will last a long time. Its an out of sight, out of mind thing.

The real reason is - $$$$! A BTR should last 250 - 300K if serviced. But then Ford don't sell reconditioned units. Lets fix this - We'll delete the external dipsticks & the owner will not know whats going on inside till it's too late. - We make money $$$!

Most taxi's around here have had their cases drilled for dipsticks - so they can keep on top of it.

Firstly fix your brakes.
2: don't use your auto as an excuse for a wannabe manual?... unless you want to replace it in regally
3: maybe you weren't in 4th?

During a service & if you supplied the dipstick & tube - extra $60 to drill & fit it. It's a lot easier if the box is out of the car.

be a bit hard to get it up to the engine bay though

When my EB was an auto many millenniums ago, f**k it used to do awesome compression lockups. It was like pulling on the handbrake! jeez it was fun. Yes it did die, but it lasted a while, and it was the only auto i had even been in that did it. It would go back to first at like 60km/h!

Now i know it was that clutch thingy that died :D , cause it would drive fine, and hold gears, but wouldn't engine brake.

Sorry i just had to reminisce for a minute :D

Some cars like old Jag's & Wolsleys etc - You had to pull a rubber grommet out of the trans tunnel & fill it up from inside of the car - but you had to pull the carpet up first!
