Hi all,

As the name explains car wont start after 1673 cam install, im fairly certain ive done everything correctly. Its got a very weak spark to ill be changing coil over to see if that helps...

Had anyone got any suggestion as to where to go after that?

Cheers

Mate, If all you have done is fit a cam, I would be looking at your timing, both cam and ignition, but I'd look at the cam timing first. You may have something a bit out of wack. Start with the simple things and go from there. Good luck.

yer im guessing it would nearly have to be timing related.Sooty do you know that best way to check and reset both cam and ignition timing? ive read a bit about ignition timing but ive never had to do this in the past... gotta love a learning expirience :)

If you have not touched the distributor the ignition timing will be ok. Workshop manual will show you cam timing marks, but from memory it is TDC on the crank and a couple of mm above the rocker cover mounting surface on the passenger side of the head.

I would look at the cam timing first. Make sure #1 piston is at tdc firing position (dont go by the balancer marks, it may have slipped) and check where the mark is on the cam sprocket. IIRC, it should line up with the top of the head. If not, there's your problem. Check this first, if that is OK, then while the engine is still at tdc, make sure the dist is pointed at #1 plug lead. You shouldnt have had to disturb the dist to change the cam, so it should still be OK.
Did you change the cam chain and/or cam sprocket?
Was it starting OK before you pulled it apart?
Do you have a workshop manual?

TDC is a must but firing position is irelevant when setting cam timing, only dist firing position which should be #1. Follow #1 plug lead back to cap and the rotor button should be pointing to that post.
Did you cable tie the timing chain to the cam sprocket when you unbolted it?

Thanks for the quick replys its been very handy.didnt change the cam chain or sprocket and chain was zip tied to sprocket so should be out but that will be the first thing i check. it may have been slightly sluggish starting before the change, perhaps ive upset something to make it worse.

i do have a gregories workshop manual but i havent found it all that helpful to date, ill have a skim through that aswell.

Will update on how i go, thanks again

hi all ive got the ute up and running again. checked cam timing firstly and that was all good. couldnt get the dizzy cap off to check ignition timing off.ending up changing the coil over and it fired after that.then the battery wouldnt hold charge to gave it a birthday and bought a newy.

cars running pretty well now, cam has made a good improvement.just have top bump up the idle a bit tomorrow.coil change = frustration :)

thats for the advise, good old ford mods helped me out again

hi, cam timing doesnt have anything to do with having a weak spark, as long as the dizzy is turning you will get the same spark , not a weak one.

mark

Ever since I fitted my 1673, I've noticed that sometimes it takes a while to get ignition, other times it's immediate. And the other day, it popped the intake pipe off the TB when I started it (scared $h!7 outta me!). This has never happened before. I thought that only happened on LPG cars?

sounds like the cam is retarded, the 1673 if anything should be advanced. my ef xr had a similar problem when i got it was the cam out 2 teeth. ran fine when going(gutless though) and was a b**ch to start cold
my old clapped out wagon ran perfect with a 1673 unless i reset ecu till it re-learnt how to cope.
