Hey guys

Got a problem with my 92 non-smartlock EB2. It's a 6 cyl auto and wont start.
I drove through a big-a** puddle the other night and going through, the engine stopped. Tried to start it to no avail. I figure maybe the water got into the clutch fan and stalled the engine (???)
It clicks once but doesnt turn over. It doesn't seem to be anywhere near starting. The radio works fine and there is plenty of voltage in the battery.
So I got the RACV to come out. The mechanic tried to turn the engine with his hand and said he can't. He suggested there's probably water in the cylinders. Given the head gasket is stuffed, he said it's that much more likely.

I looked over the engine, the alternator looks fine and the dizzy didn't seem to have too much water on it.

So I figure the head has to come off, new head gasket on, new head bolts in and "hey presto". Can anyone suggest anything else? Are there other things I should be looking for (in terms of why the car wont start)?
And does anyone have an idea roughly how much that'd cost to get done at a mechanic?

Thanks

Sounds like you're flogging a dead horse there mate, would be cheaper and better in the long run to get an engine swap to a low Klm AU 6. Can pick them up now for around the $400 mark with warranty and around 100K clicks on em! If the Mechanic can't budge the motor by hand, sounds like it may have siezed, which would probably involve a fairly costly rebuild.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do mate.

Thanks for the links mate. Only problem with the AU engine is then there'd need to be thermo fans put in, PS pump, new belts, K-frame mods etc
- All of which arent financially plausible at the mo

3rd Link is for replacement EA-ED motors. Cheapest way out if you're strapped for cash. Just need to put on a carton of piss and get a few mates around to give ya a hand and should just bolt straight in :)

Try cranking the engine and getting someone to tap the starter motor with a steel bar.But if the motor wont turn over with a half inch braker bar i would say remove the spark plugs and crank the engine over to see if there is any water in the cylinders.
If the starter motor trick wont help seems like the engine is suffering from hydraulic lock, thus removing the spark plugs reduceds the compression and will evacuate the water in the cylinders.

What does tapping the starter do? And where is it located? Under the alternator?

maybe your replays are flooded thats why it don't crank.

there should be a starter motor replay somewhere and a ecu replay as well that might be water damaged cauing it to not crank over as well

Not too sure where these "replays" would be (assume you mean relay). The car wont crank AT ALL though. It just clicks once does nothing...

Ringastinga kindly came around and had a look at the car today. Took the plugs out and went to crank it and it was no different to when the plugs were in. There is definately some water in the cylinders though.
Tapped the starter motor with a breaker bar while attempting to crank the engine to no avail. The starter seems to be fine though and getting power.
There seems to be water spilling out from the water pump also :s

So it looks like I'm pushing the thing to the mechanic on Tuesday for a final verdict and start saving for a new motor. I bloody well hope it's the motor because I'd hate to put a new one in only to find the problem is elsewhere.
Anyone have any other ideas as to what could be wrong? Bottom end bearing maybe?
