I phoned 6 of the Canberra exhaust shops last week for quotes. During my quote mission, one dude mentioned he puts the cat a little further back and believes there's a few kw's in that.

Position of the muffler? Not sure, might be slight gains to had I guess. It's usually just before the diff anyway, so that's as far back as you can go for the first muffler.

I understand that when the muffler is at the back of the car you gain more torque and more kw if near the engine. However i've never had this proven. I would be more careful in the selection of the diameter size of the pipe used, as the wider the more you have to rev to get in to your power band.

I would've thought the over way round. Move cat/muffler's closer to the motor to build backpressure / lower end torque, and further away to gain more hp elsewhere in the rev range.

Does anyone know what I mean?! lol does it make sense?

This is my CAT, a modified unit, with twin 2&1/4" going into a large volume muffler, and a single 2&1/2" tailpipe.
The gains were such that I had to fit a piggy back ECU to stop the engine leaning out. The engine is standard, original bore, std cam, std inlet manifold, etc.

I dunno how many times I've seen that exhaust now! It's an interesting one tho, the twin sys allows more flow? or too close to compare to single 2.5" typical sports sys?

It's another good example that putting the muffler further back is a prolly a good idea, as all performance systems are setup like this... so I'm betting there's a happy spot for the cat, and it'd be back further too..

resonator will quiet it down a little and also cut the drone when cruising the highway.

if you have a bad drone it will really piss you off..

its usually an extra, but you just ask for it, they shouldn't charge much extra for it. usually if its a premade exhaust they come in 2 parts, front part and tail section and the tail sections are either straight thru or with a resonator.
