What may i expect to find if i took apart a catalytic converter.
This is for off road purpose. Is there any restrictions inside that would hinder performance.. Would the ECU have a problem with the exhaust gases I only have the one converter at the moment and dont wish to take apart Does the ford 4lt six like i free flowing exhaust system or some back pressure.. Iam restricted to the cast iron setup... thanks |

A) No Q) Would the ECU have a problem with the exhaust gases A) No. the only reading taken is from the O2 sensor prior to the Cat. Q) I only have the one converter at the moment and dont wish to take apart A) Please see above Pic. Q) Does the ford 4lt six like i free flowing exhaust system or some back pressure. A) Many an argument will be had over this question. |

BACK PRESSURE. that is pressure in the exhaust stopping exhaust gases from leaving the combustion chamber. Your rules state EFI engines must use 'standard exhaust size' to extend past the driver. Then you just put a 90degree bend on it and dump it out the side. |

You'd be better off removing the cat completely rather then hollowing it out.
Having an open chamber like a gutted cat will impeed the exhaust gas flow and velocity. Basically the exhaust gasses flow out in little pockets that push eachother out. If there's a large area for the gasses to expand they will get all messed up and not flow out smoothly. Very basic there. |

Yes you will gain power from removing the converter and replacing it with a straight through pipe...

its about 4-5rwkw, hes using it for offroad so im geussing it not going to be a normal everyday car. Theres no point having a cat if you dont need it.

Lol. I've seen (and experienced) 3-4rwkw losses with gutted cats, and 0.5rwkw gain from a straight pipe. Backed up with 0.1sec losses on the 1/4 and 0.01sec gains respectively. This was on a high 14 sec XR6. Surely relates closely yo a stock cast manifold equipped car.

In a class with rules as tight as the one he runs in, that sort of gain is worth chasing.
