Hi all
My replacement list for my new ED continues. The fuel pump is making a cool high pitched whining noise so I need to replace it. First up, I have an MPFI pump out of a 90 EA S - will that do? Second, do I need to completely drain the fuel tank to do the wagon pump replacement? If so, what is the best way to do it? Any help appreciated Cheers RD

Pretty sure the pump is the same from EA to EL on the MPFI models.
I just opened the fuel pump access hole and let it drain from there into a funnel and jerry - I couldn't see any drain plug or anything (but then my tank is cut down). Hardest thing I found was getting the pump out of the tank, the fuel sender unit is long and squiggly, and kept fowling on the leaf springs, ended up putting a couple hundred killos (including me, my mate, my 65kg dog, and some barrels of water) to lower it to a point that it would easily slip in and out. The most annoiying thing is getting the fuel lines off. |

My tank is currently between the red line and 1/4, or so the gauge says. Thanks too for the heads up on extracting the pump and fuel lines - oh joy, more barked knuckles to look forward to!

Alrighty
I am ready to change the fuel pump tomorrow and have been under the wagon looking. I hope I am blessed with an easy fuel line removal as I have the quick release joiners on the ED. I do have a question: the outer ring on the wagon is vastly different from a sedan. Is the wagon one more like catch system than a rotating ring? For example, do you turn the pump/sender assembly to unlock it from the mount? Any tips appreciated.. Cheers RD

Cheers RD The quick release hose joiners are the problem of why the fuel lines are a pain in the a***. As for the ring, I used a chisel and hammer to turn it. Then remove the ring, then work the fuel level sensor and pump unit out. |

Thanks for that. So the quick connecters are that only in name huh? Should be interesting.
Hopefully the rain clears before tomorrow, I don't have a garage to use so it will all be done in the driveway - and it is raining in my part of NSW at the moment

as far as i know the wagon pump is different to sedan??
but you can use any mpfi pump from a wagon.. |

Thanks for making me look Troyman. I remembered asking this question on my own forum and here is what I got:
"just looked up the Bosch cattledog, All sedans EA-EL with MPI use same pump, EA and EB wagons use that pump as well, ED and after (9/93>) wagons use a differant pump." That was all fine when I only had EA's & EB's but now I have an ED that changes everything. I don't have one of them so I am stuffed until I get some more dollars in. Bugger!!! Cheers RD

I would be pulling it out still and comparing it to the the earlier one. Just because the part number is different, doesn't mean it won't fit or work.

Whoa! I just phoned Winford and they didn't really know what the difference was. Was quoted $368.00 for a new pump - OUCH!
WIll find out in a day or two if they are infact different. The current pump got me from the North coast to here so it should get me around locally for another couple of days. I'll just have to ignore that whirring sound from the tank
