Ok here's the story,

I have an ED Fairmont with a 3:27 Ratio Diff

I wanna change the speedo sender because I have a different Diff and therefore the Speedo is out.

I rang up Ford and they said that I would need this "Transducer" or something or other which is $69.40, and I would also need the Speedo Drive Gear, which is $13.70.

So here is the Question, do I need this Transducer or not? or will I just need the Speedo Drive Gear?????

Thanks Guys,

James

Thanks,

Also how easy is it to swap? do I need to do anything like lower the gearbox or anything?

not sure to be honest.. last time i changed one the gearbox wasnt in the car.. im pretty sure there is room to do it in the car.. if you have to lower the cross member a bit its not a big job..

Is the car manual or auto.If its auto the shift points will be out if you change the speedo gear.
i just went through all this with a diff ratio change in my ef, i ended up getting a speedo corrector and using the stock speedo gear.

It's Auto, please explain further with the shift points.

what mitchg911 said
iirc the 1 bolt is 8mm? then the transducer pops out
small clip on the gear so easy
drop the cross member down for ease, ie undo the bolts but dont take them off

Yeah this bottom bit I want to comfirm.

My Current Car setup is: ED Fairmont. Turbo Blades, Auto, 3:27 LSD Diff. Speedo out by 6km's Gogetta worked it out to be in the end.

Um I have a question, is the Tranducer on the left hand side of the gearbox or the right hand side? does it have a red insulater cable going to it or not?

Nevermind I found it, was rather easy, I didn't lower the Crossmember though, but without doing that I come out with a few scratches on my hand.

Anyway the old gear said 20 on the back of it (I'm assuming 20 teeth), the new one says 21 teeth, so I hope they have given me the correct one.

Ok then, i changed my speedo gear to suit the xr6 diff i put in my ef and the shift points were way out.The trans wouldnt change at all under full throttle unless i lifted my foot off, the motor used to rev out past 6000rpm which is way out of its power band.
It also made the fuel economy worse.
I installed a speedo corrector from shiftkits . com and put the original gear back in and the box shifts at the normal rpm again.
Dont listen to anyone who says otherwise.
To be sure i would send 66 coupe a pm and ask him because he owns shiftkits .com and knows everything you need to know about it.Jamie is very good with fords and got my ef sorted no worries.

No it wont fix it disco frank, if you change the original speedo gear that is matched to the auto ecu the shift points will be wrong.
Do a search and you will find the proof

ummm, well I bought the speedo gear, and fitted it and it doesn't do anything like what you said it did to your's Green Car. The only thing I really want to do is do more testing to see if it is the correct one or not. I managed to find an old lady to drive behind who was doing supposedly 100km/h because that is what it said on my speedo, it would say 106km/h before.

mate it is the 1st i have heard of this problem

the ecu is not specific to the diff

for it to change gear it takes signals from the engine and the gearbox aka the transducer

im guessing you put the wrong gear in your car

many a member on here have changed their diffs and the spedo driven gear to match it and have no problems

Green Car I seem to have no problems with it, I will be doing some more city driving to see the 60km/h bit so yeah.
