Hi all

Just a few questions about timing. I have a el falcon.

does it have to be in diagnostic mode to check the timing?

I put a timing light on the balancer and the mark is 20-30 mm away to the left from the timing cover mark. 1 degree is 1.5mm and base timing is 2 degrees, so base timing the 2 marks should be very close where as mine are not, So does that mean mine is out by 20-30 degrees ?
Or as I previously asked will diagnostic mode be more accurate ?

I've read many threads and been thru the workshop manual but just wanted to ask u guys, if it helps I can post up a pic of where my mark is.

My car goes very well, but I need to know if my timing is the factory setting

Cheers

yes it needs to be in diagnostic mode to do the timing..
you bridge the 2 diagnostic pins start the car and wait aprox 2 mins,(el ecu only) then the engine will change sound and rpm will drop for a sec, then you can check and adjust the timing..

I got my car in diagnostic mode and my timing mark is 25-30mm away from the timing cover mark,
Then I pulled out the spade connector I had bridging the terminals , my engine almost stalled then went to normal revs but kept hunting so I put the timing light on the balancer and My timing mark would go very close to the timing cover mark then it would move away each time it hunted, the mark kept moving back and fourth , then I turned off my car and checked the timing again and it was fine the mark wasn't moving ,
So should I play with the dizzy until the mark is close as possible to lining up with the timing cover ??

What does it mean that my mark is so far out ??

Thanks for the vid, that's where mine is, I'm guessing a previous owner advanced it 2 or so degrees because urs isn't factory timing and mine doesn't look factory either.

Thanks mate
