When you're cleaning ally, you should always start with the mildest cleaning method possible:

· Plain water

· Mild soap / detergent

· Solvents such as kerosene, turpentine or white spirit

· Non-etching chemical cleaner

· Wax-based polish

· Abrasive wax

· Abrasive cleaner

Water marking / staining is the biggest thing to watch for and prevent when cleaning ally, but seeing as it's your cylinder head, it shouldn't really matter :)

you shouldn't have to clean the gasket off anyway. all the gasket will come off when the head is skimmed
