As I am considering buying an EL Fairmont Ghia, I was wondering what are the common problems in the EL's?

There is nothing hard, time consuming or expensive about replacing the head gasket is there?

Is that the ONLY common problem?

also the gearbox, cooling system, and rotors.

Theres alot of crap left in the block after the casting process (or whatever it is...) that can result in blocked radiators.

This, i think also has an affect on the gearbox. But as long as the gearbox has been serviced meticously, then it should be sweet. Look at getting a cooler for it aswell if you do get one. Heat is the biggest killer of the auto.

Other than that, my EL has 225k on it and apart from the gearbox rebuild (3000kms ago and $2000 later) and a new radiator (about 10,000k ago) its sweet.

Engine has never missed a beat.

oh, the standard suspension is pretty soft aswell, so might want to look at doing springs and shocks, if not already done!

Cheers

My EL Fairmont Ghia has had nothing serious wrong apart from a seeping head gasket cylinder 5 exuast side. The normal wear and tear like tie rods, rack ends, heater/radiator hoses, shocks/struts and thats about it. Im very happy with it and its just done 219,000 k's
