The boss wasn't pleased when he first saw it! Once I explained what happened he was a lot more lighthearted about it all - probably because I didn't lose my face in the blast
 Seen this kind of thing happen before with LPG but never with petrol and never this big - usually just blown gaskets, PCV and a busted oil cap. Certainly surprised me, I didn't even flinch - I had no idea what was going on until about 5 seconds later once the smoke was clearing and i realised something blew, and then about 15 seconds after that when I could see what had actually happened! You can hardly see the split in the rocker cover when you pinch it together so he's going to get it welded back together from the inside and hopefully it doesn't deform too much. And sorry, I didn't have time to whip out the camera and film it hahaha I'll be sure to think ahead next time.

Happened to my brothers (lpg) EA a few years ago - but i'm curious - the title suggests the crankcase (i.e. block, sump) exploded - did it, or was it just the rocker cover? Or do you just mean that the fuel pooled in the sump?

sorry, title must be a bit misleading.
The fuel vapour from the flooded crankcase rose to the rocker cover and caused the big pop, hence labelling it crankcase explosion.. Now i think about it, should probably inspect the timing cover and sump gasket etc for damage...

Yeh, thats what I was thinking! My brothers car was never the same after... when you think that the bang was big enough to crack a cast rocker cover, that shock wave can't have done the rest of the engine alot of good. Reminds me of one years ago when I drove cabs, sitting at the airport and a cab somewhere ahead of me was cranking and cranking trying to start, and I assume hitting the primer on his LPG lots... he was about 10 cabs ahead of me and when it went bang in a BIG way my ears were ringing....as were about 30 other drivers - there was no intake manifold to speak of left....bits of it everywhere.

Yeh, it was one of those occasions where you're thinking `this is going to end badly...' he must have been cranking solid for about 4 - 5 minutes - as I say I was sitting about 10 cabs back, window up cos it was cold, and even then my ears rung - it dented the bonnet from inside as well - this was on an EL Falcon cab...

Yep, never heard such a loud bang - MUCH louder than gunshots, fireworks etc...they actually had the bonnet up when it happened and there were three other drivers around the engine bay at the time - amazingly, nobody got hurt (other than not being able to hear anything !!)

Soon find out whether it's any good or not - either way he's not losing anything by having a crack. Pardon the pun
