Could someone please explain in a nutshell what the following features do and when I should use them?

(1) Cruise Control - is this for travelling long distances for example down the freeway/highway?

(2) Economy Mode - is it accurate to assume that I should use this everytime I want to save fuel? There must be some "downside" to this mode of operation? Please explain

economy mode...

in this mode the gearbox shifts earlier in the revs to try and save fuel. Also the torque convertor in the auto "locks up" in 3rd gear instead of 4th gear in normal mode

Locks up in 3rd gear?

Does that mean it's not good to use on freeways/highways?

I travel down the freeway quite often

when listening the tape that comes with the car it is said that ecconomy mode is for city driving and towing
if you drive with a light right foot i dont think you will see a big difference

lockup is a good thing. Its when the engine & gearbox are 100% working in sync.

i leave it in normal mode (power mode in earlier falcons) it seems to be alot more responsive around town, and it seems willing to drop down to the correct gear without trying to force it as much

i was wondering why it wasnt going into 4th in econ mode :x
well u can trick it and have it in 4th gear while in econ mode..not that it makes a difference..
just drive normal and when u get into 4th gear..flick the econ mode..
but ive been using econ mode on the freeway :p...in 4th gear but with that little trick.
i cant stand using econ mode in normal driving..car loses about 20% power i reckon!

the econ/norm switch- since all it does is effect how and when your box changes, I only use economy mode on the freeway, since i dont want it to drop to 2nd gear when overtaking. around town i prefer it in normal/power mode since it selects gears quicker and more apropriatly. Once you get used to using norm around town, you tend not to put as much throttle when accelerating about town, and your economy is the same. the plus side is less wear on the gearbox in normal mode with the quicker shifts reducing friction.

Sorry guys i'm still confused, are these points right? :shock:

Economy mode
Benefits - Saves fuel, good for driving on the freeway
Disadvantages - Loss of power

Normal mode
Benefits - More power, Less wear on the gearbox (due to less friction), better suited for driving around town (made for lots of starting and stopping)
Disadvantages - Uses more fuel compared to economy mode,

you dont loose power what so ever all is does is change the shift pattern and when the convertor locks up. At WOT they change exactly the same, its only different when slight throttle movements are made. Go up a hill in econ at about 70k's then flick the button to normal and it will kick back a gear.

i thought in econ mode it shifts @ 5000rpm, and normal mode holds till redline

mine changes at the exact same spot in econ and normal when WOT

that could be your cam. normal is supposed to shift later than econ. anothe thing is the box will hold gears out longer the lower it gets on fluid.

I have been driving on eco mode all the time (highway + short distance town driving).... does this mean im making my gears more worn out?
Also after the debate can someone put the pros and cons at the end. Tt will be nice to see.
