howdy peoples, resently changed the head on my ea manual, head gasket gone i had a ef head cleaned up to do straite swapp, had it shaved 25 thou to sute gas, used a au head gasket too, all whent well, the only complaint is it seems to lack throttle response or dull, it has tourqe just not as perky as the ea head was if that makes sence, i was thinking that the cam is now i bit retarded? engine shop mentioned it, from machining the head, i was thinking also that the broad band manifold
is designed to work with that head? spark plugs? cooler range? with higher comprestion is there any necessities that go with it? any idears, thoughts would be apprieciated, thanks

Well, it all depends on how OLD (klm wise) the bottom end was? If it was say 200,000 klms old you would lose a little bit of power due to the bottom end being old and when you take the head off an old motor you are going to lose a little zip. :(

it may also have something to do with the ea head having much smaller chambers..
you have now put a ef head which has larger head chambers..
even though you have shaved the ef head you might find that your compression ratio is still lower than it was before..

usually if you fit an ea head to an ef it will raise the comp ratio slightly..
but you have gone the other way....

thanks for the prompt replies guys, the motor has 338.xxxxk on it i was concerned about the bottom end taking the extra comp but it still has the cross hach patterns in the bores and no lip on the bores either no carbon build up been on gas, doesnt use oil can go months without going down, with the combustion chambers im a bit sceptical, i will put pics up of the ef and ea the most notisable diffarance is that tail bit around the inlet valve, would ave thought the better designed ef head would be better overall, shaving the head would ave put it over the line i thought? wot use think? the timing i might play with..

the ea head = much higher comp on the ef, ef head on ea=lower comp

i advanced the timing witch improved it. fairmont54 what can you tell me about the comp ratios between ef and ea? you had any exsperiance with them?

well the info i have is in fact that the ea has lower compression 8.8:1 compared to the ef which is 9.3:1..
but the compression differences are in the pistons..

but as i said above the ea head has a smaller combustion chamber due to the slightly smaller bore and the ea head has the swirl ridge in the combustion chamber making the combustion area smaller(capabillility of having higher comp if fitted to an ef engine)..

so now the ef head has a slightly larger bore and no swirl ridge which now gives you a larger combustion chamber reducing the volume hence lowering the compression..

ive spoke to the guys at the machiene shop (albury engine reconditiong) about putting 3.9 heads on 4.0 and they reckon the compresion would be to high unless you machiene out the swirll
